    Interesting Coins Minted 9-12 AD

From my last Interesting coin post, you know Augustus was Ceasar of the Roman Empire from 27 BC to 14 AD. What you may not know is that certain areas of the Roman Empire had hand-picked individual governors known as Procurators who ruled for the Emperator, with authority to enforce the edicts of Caesar, i.e. the collection of taxes, the maintenance of an armed guard and the power to exact punishment. The Procurator also minted coins for circulation. Such was the case for Judea.

In AD 9 Caesar Augustus's choice for Procurator in Judea was Marcus Ambibulus. One of the first coins he authorized was a silver Shekel which was struck by the Jerusalem Mint (KR mintmark) circa AD 9 - AD 10 (photo courtesy of Munshandlung Ritter GmbH):

Other coins minted during Marcus Ambibulous' short reign were Bronze Prutahs. Obverses feature a barley beard curved to the right and the reverses display an eight-branched palm tree bearing two bunches of dates (photos courtesy of Quadriga Ancients):

    Hello Clinker,
Thanks again for the nice read. It is always nice to read your threads.

I have one of the Prutah AD 9 coins depicted in your thread. It was given to me by the lady that helped raise me in Southern California. This is the same lady that helped raise my father so she was part of our family for a couple generations. She passed away when I was about 10 & of course, she knew that I was into collecting coins. The coin remains in my collection today.

Another nice/quick read. I dont own any Judean coins, never felt a connection to one to add to my collection. They're interesting though.
