Been searching Halves in 2011 since 4/16/11

    Here are my current stats:

    Searched:
    21 Boxes
    $1180 partial box rolls
    $400 estimate in loose halves????
    Total of $12,080 searched

    Found:
    40%ers 80
    90%ers 12 (2 of which were Frankies)
    7 Proofs
Oddballs: 1812 Portuguese 5 Reis coin, 2 Irish Pounds, 2 Counter Stamps, 1987 Portuguese 50 Escudos
NIFC: about $60 worth, that I recently dumped back into circulation (need the money for Silver! :) )

    Two boxes of halves:

    3 NIFC
    1 1944D WL Half
    1 1954 Franklin
    10 AU or better

Quite a surprise finding that walker!

I'm up to almost 60 boxes of nickels now without a 43-D. I have every other war Nick... as a matter of fact, I pulled my third 42-S today. If anybody wants to trade me a 43-D... for any other date, hit me up. I'd really appreciate it, especially if it was a nice AU example.

This week's been slow. Only found 2 war nickels so far, and my weekly box of halves was a complete skunk, not even 1 NIFC. They ordered me a second box, though, so I'll probably go pick that up, even though I suspect another skunk.
However, when I went to cash in change, the change machine screen said "TELLER HELP NEEDED." So I got a teller, and he found 2 Ikes jammed in it that some dummy dropped in and apparently just left. There was about 30 cents in change still there, from the last guy too. And it says in two different places "NO EISENHOWER DOLLARS". But I was happy to get two Ikes for $0. I probably would've crapped my pants if it was two morgans or something.

I had a similar experience Lon, got an Ike for free because it was stuck in the change machine!

That's great - I just got an Ike this morning for free. It was sitting on top of the coin counter at the bank. So, I just snagged it. Nothing like free money!

One of the Ike's I pulled out of a TD bank machine was a '72 Type 2. :D I think I've gotten three for free.

    Halves to look for

Other items to look for in halves:
    • 1974-D has a really nice doubled die (look on the word "TRUST"). I've found a dozen or so of these and sold a couple of them for a small premium.
    • No "FG" errors (referring to the designer initials on the reverse missing on certain coins). Look for this error on 1982, 1983, 1989, and 1972-D. I've found a bunch of the 1982, a couple of the 1983, but none of the other two. The 1972-D carries a really nice premium
    • Not Intended For Circulation (NIFC) halves. These include 1987 and 2002 - present.
    • S mint halves which are proofs.
    • There is also a doubled die on the Obverse 1973, but I've never found one of these.
    • Other errors (I've found a couple of really neat struck through errors with some of the design missing).

    Good luck. :thumb:

At an average of 4.3 silver coins per box, you are way ahead of my average. Keep it up!!!! Nice going!

Thanks Bob. I can't imagine ever finding the amount of silver you've found though! I don't tend to have much luck searching loose halves. Eventually I'll hit a few loose scores I guess. That sure helps numbers a lot I bet, when you get lucky and get a roll or 2 of silver directly from the tellers that someone turned in.

colligoergosum I collect, therefore I am

Chester - are you in Oregon? (I know that there's at least one other "Astoria" in the US). I'm seriously considering driving the hour to Astoria to pick up a box from a bank there. The boxes you've been getting are prodigious compared to mine. Which bank do you use?

Lucky silver streak continues...hit an out of the way town at lunch and hit about 7 banks. I got $36 in teller trays halves (1 - 40%er), $60 in CWR halves (7 - 40%ers), and 3 Ikes (4 total Ikes today counting the freebie this morning).

My finds from the Lunch Hunt: 8 - 40% Kennedy's

    2 x 1965
    1 x 1966
    3 x 1967
    2 x 1968 D

    4 Ikes (3 x 1972; 1 x 1976)

and I bought a box of dimes to search tonight! Great day so far!

Forgot to mention that the one bank that had the silver half when I asked if they had some they were quick to check around, and one lady said I have a dollars worth. I hand her a dollar and she slides them over and says:

'Sorry this one looks a bit dirty and old...not in very good condition!'

I'm thinking...Thanks Lady - thats Silver. It looks amazing too me!

    Ace is killing me.

$296.30 bag of dimes, nada. Picked up a bag of nickels, too... Shifted the bag around and whatnot for a bit and spotted two war nicks, so hopefully there's a few more buried in there.

Another $40 in dimes - skunk on Silver
Did find a 1968 Canadian - I'm almost positive this is not 50% silver from the sound of it
I have not put a magnet up to it, but with my luck I'm sure it's nickel

The 1968 Canadian dime stuck to a magnet, no silver for me yesterday.

Merc - I'm still staying out of your 'TURF' so it's out there brother! Try another road trip.

I only wish I had a day I could waste running around with the amount of banks in our area.

Have you found the closer you get to Philly (in the burbs) the snarkier the people are at the banks?

I think the little towns out in Chester County are much more friendly. Coatesville was a goldmine today.
