2011 Proof Silver Eagle @ $59.95 - Too much?

The Mint sent out an email to those with a subscription order for the 2011 ASE Proof coins that the price will be $59.95 and a limit of 100 per household.

Is a $20+ Premium too much for a Proof version of the Bullion coin?

@$64.95 delivered I'm starting to wonder if I really want my subscription coin.

    What are your thoughts?

    What are you doing?

Last year they were sold for $49.95 while silver was $25ish. An online dealer I order from a lot is selling them for $100

I have been buying Proof Silver Eagles since 1988. I prefer the Proof eye apeal, so I am willing to pay for it. So I think they will always be worth more in the long run.

I also got the email reminder today because I too have Proof ASE subscriptions. Yes, it's a lot more this year, but I'm buying for my collection so that's my justification. I'll be buying a few and probably sending a few back due to haze (wash residue), marks or problems I find on some of the examples they send me. The return shipping cost will add a few more dollars to my overall cost of those coins I keep. It's the same old game but in the end the complete collection is worth it to me.

Soon after release certain dealers will be offering the same coins graded for even more than the Mint sells them, probably while one can still buy them in OGP from the Mint. To some those will be worth the initial offer price from a dealer.

2010 Proof ASEs in OGP are already selling for $65, less than a year since being released. I'm sure the recent dip in silver spot prices and the higher Mint offer price will dissuade some buyers, but that's nothing new. Many will eventually cave and buy one or more for their collections too.

The email also mentioned: "Due to the high volatility in the market price of silver, this price may be subject to change. We will notify you of a price change before processing your credit card. You may cancel your order at any time prior to processing."

More likely to rise than drop I'd bet. If the price drops too much they just will not be available for sale. The Mint's pricing of silver coins sold direct from the Mint is becoming more and more like the pricing of gold and platinum products.

Gosh, I feel really left out. I've had this subscription for years and no notification e-mail for me? I know it's Moy. He's still mad at me (even though he's gone).........

What evil lurks in the hearts of Moy... Muwah-ha ha ha...

Check your trash folder just in case it got spam-filtered. They may not have sent out all notifications on the same day, maybe you'll get one yet in the next day or so... they anticipate being released in about 4 weeks. So you still have time to set up your subscriptions if you get left out. 100 units per household is the starting minimum, they ain't gonna run out at these prices.

When I first saw this post I immediately went to my subscriptions page on the Mint site Chris. The subscription is still in force so hopefully (blows nose and wipes away a tear) I'll get an e-mail soon.......

  16. I got the email yesterday from the Mint and will still purchase the proof ASE at the $59.95 price tag. It is a beautiful coin and a must have for my collection. TC

Got my e-mail yesterday. Can't wait to get mine, it's a beautiful coin. I know the price is going up, but these days, what isn't?

I've been collecting them since 1986 so I can't stop now no matter what the price hits. Yes, I'm hooked. *sigh Hoping that the price drives aways those that buy them because they were affordable at one time. Looking for the lowest production levels since....ever. I can dream can't I? :)

Interesting enough the subscription price on the the web site still says $45 and change.

Wow, what ever happened to "we'll buy all you have at $3 over spot"? You'd think they had been expecting the price to soar then, and you'd think they're expecting the price to plummet now. In this one situation, I kind of hope their past performance is an indicator of future results...

I haven't been paying attention lately so I have to ask... Are the 2011 ASE uncirculated bullion types out of the question again this year?
