All hail the wheat penny

I love my wheat penny collection. I have been at it for over a year now. Since then I have gotten almost a comets set for myself and plenty of duplicates. I had inherited a small coin collection ranging from pennies to stuff I have be never seen! Well now I am saving up to buy the real expensive and rare wheaties. I was hoping to discuss this wonderful cent with other enthusiasts! Following soon I will try to set up some pics of the collection I'm growing. All of my best pieces I keep in a whittman's book that has a beautiful display set up so both sides of the coon may be seen through a protective pain of plastic.Anyway as a newer collector who is into Us coins I would say wheat pennies are an excellent place to start on a budget until you can move into the more expenditure silvers and other such coin.

I've been searching for wheats to start a collection for six months and out of hundreds of rolls of cents I have found a grand total of 2 wheats. I find it extremely hard to find them. I cant even find any of the 2009 designs.

I have 11 banks I check at in my area and surrounding areas, and have only found 2 in my 6 months of searching lol

 

Yea they are becoming more and more rare to be sure. I don't normally find too many when I search rolls. Your best bet it to buy unsearched rolls frok a dealer or eBay but be sure the seller has a good reputation and reviews. I haven't really found many books that are especially helpful for the beginner except of ours the whittman's guide for pricing. They have a ton of info! Well along as your having fun just remember a good collection takes time to acquire. It has been said that's not just the destination but also the journey that makes a collection enjoyable.

 

i dont like paying a premium for the stuff in my collection. I'll find more eventually....hopefully

 

Premium not an option eh? I hear you there. Well coin shows and eBay are good places to look. But a coin shop can be reasonable on you too. Just keep looking at all the options.

 

Welcome! Lincoln cents are probably the most collected series in the world. It's a very fun way to get started. But you'd be surprised how expensive some of them can be.

I don't mean $1.7 million spent on a bronze 1943-D. Or even $200k spent on a 1909 VDB proof. Gem red keys and better can easily run into five digits. You don't need to move into silver or gold to find expensive treasures!

Well, what do you guys think the chances are of finding a 1922 plain, or a 1931-S in circulation? I mean, IF someone went looking through thousands and thousands of dollars worth, do you think one would pop up?

 

i love my wheats.i have some very nice ones.i have to get pics of them up.watch that whitman mine turned my coins blue.but they been in it for 30-40 years.they were all bu but now not so much.ty

Even in 1968, ten years after they stopped making them, Wheats were hard to find in circulation! I got real excited once when I found a well-worn Wheat from the '40s in change back then.

slim to none. ask merc crazy how many he's found. i believe he's searched several thousands of dollars in cents and still hasn't found one.

 

Went to the bank about a year ago to get my usual $10.00 in rolls to search. As I got around to going thru them ... surprise ... THREE of the rolls were filled with wheats.

Man's name and phone # were written on the rolls. Tried to call, but phone was disconnected.

Wish I'd gotten more than $10.00 that day, but I sure did feel lucky.
