I like any kind, but most of the Indians I have seen are not nearly as dramatic as Lincolns. I have no idea if it has to do with the times or the fact the woodies were (are?) frowned upon and not kept as much.
I got wood, & forgive my lack of diffused lighting(Bright LEDs), my microcapture is working well & I'm blown away by photoscape.
Way cool, '08-S, Swish. That's a cent I've wanted to own since I was 10. The first branch mint penny. Yours looks to have a very nice texture...nice and grainy. Keep it forever! Lance.
I like this thread a lot. I really get into Lincoln cents, but I typically shy away from woodies for a classic BN or RB look. Anyway, I've seen this effect on large cents and and it is more of thicker banding like a tiger stripe from my experience. I had the chance to buy this coin for 20 bucks and I didn't hesitate due to the nice banding on the coin. I just dug it out to share and keep this topic going a little. Thanks, Matt
That is doubly interesting. And I was wondering why I had never seen a woody large cent. Woodies are caused by improperly mixed alloys. However, the composition of large cents is pure copper. How can pure copper be improperly mixed? The only thing I can think of is that they could not properly purify the copper back then.
I agree, rlm. Large cents were often made from low grade copper...whatever could be had. It's likely that impurities caused the streaking. Lance.
I did not really think this was a woody until I looked closely. The grain may not be as bold as others, but I think the colors make up for it. In hand, the colors are almost as bright as the last pictures. Besides all that, it is in pretty good shape. I am not sure about 66, but I see no problem getting a 65 (assuming they accept the color).
