Thaler Coinage of the Pre Empire German States - Chapter 23

As you know this is the 23rd post on the crown-sized Silver Coinage of the Pre Empire German States known as Thaler, its subdivisions, its fractionals and its multiples. To date we've seen the crown-sized Mark coinage of the 38 Free States of the German Empire that existed from 1871-1918 (Duchies, Pricipalities, Electorates, and Empires).

My research is an alphebetical presentation. Currently we are still under the listings of the letter "C" which now takes us to Coburg.

Previously we learned, that though all the German Free States issued silver Thaler coins, many minor divisions of the Thaler were of different denominations depending on the influences of sovereignty, principality, treaties, rulership, war pacts, and territorial memberships.

During Coburg's existence it was part of Saxony (a.k.a. Saxe or Sachsen) and referred to as Saxe-Coburg, but often, because of inheritance, coupled or tripled with the Free States of Eisenach (Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach), Gotha (Saxe-Coburg-Gotha), and Saalfeld (Saxe-Colburg-Saalfeld) as well as others. In fact, at times, there were corulers of Coburg.

So you can learn just where Coburg was situated within Saxony here's a map courtesy of Wikipedia:

This map shows the almagation of Saalfeld to the Duchy Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld:

This map shows the amalgation of Gotha to the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha:

Now that you know the adjustments Coburg had to endure, let's look at some of its coinage:

Have not looked at all the coins you list here yet, but it sure is an impressive "lot". :) Just one minor thing - the coin depicted here http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotvi...Lot=2707&Val=d8690fc67275b0317e3928c2ebd92f23 is a piece from Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. The description does mention Coburg, but that other coin is not shown.

Coburg sure changed states, so to say, fairly often. And there are some more oddities. In the years of the personal (and then real) union of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, the duchy had two capitals, Coburg and Gotha. The ducal court actually was in one place for six months, then moved to the other, and back half a year later.

As for where Coburg is these days ... well, after the 1918 revolution and the end of the monarchy, the double-duchy was split again, and the republics of Sachsen-Coburg and Sachsen-Gotha were established. Two years later Sachsen-Coburg joined the state of Bavaria while Sachsen-Gotha joined the newly established state of Thuringia.

This also meant that, between 1949 and 1990, the cities of Coburg and Gotha were in two different countries. And they still are in two different states.
