Well, I've gone and done it. More than a year after completing my first set of coins and tucking them away in their Dansco... I have decided the set isn't complete after all. I am converting from an ASE 7181 Dansco (no proofs) to an album that contains spots for ASE proofs in addition to the Unc set I have complete. So now, I no longer have a coin series completed. I am not sure how to feel about that.
Though, you will feel a great feeling of accomplishment after completing the proofs portion of the ASE series. Are you going with PCGS or NGC certified? Good luck and I wish you the best on your journey! -Brian
You still have a complete BU ASE set even without the proofs. BTW: I have seen many of the lower mintage ASE proofs sell for lower prices than they were a year ago, so it may be a good time to start that set. TC
I had a similar situation when I was putting my birthyear set together. I was about finished with a business strike set when I said, 'Hey, what about the proofs?' I finally got it completed but I'm in the market for for an upgrade to one of the 50¢ proof varieties. (Just my luck. I was born in a year when the proof halves came in two types!)
IDK, the 95 W PR is still over $2,000 for a 60 according to numismedia.com, and eBay I see a 70 UCAM sold for $13,795.00.
Since many (most?) of us don't have that kind of coin budget, I personally would put that item in the same category as an 1856 FE or a 1916 SLQ. Sort of an "everything but".
Bah, a set is what you consider a set. Too much forced collecting in US collecting. Buy what you consider to be a complete set, and feel free to leave out any gimmick coins as you see fit. Worst thing that ever happened to US collecting was books with holes denoted in it. It makes everyone feel they HAVE to have what the folder collector or red book editor feels should be included. Come to the dark side my friend, in ancient collecting we will never say any coin is needed in your collection, its completely free and up to you.
I was thinking the same thing as I was catching up on this thread. I have my UNC State 1/4s in an album, and the proofs are in 2x2s in a binder.
OGP is how I buy them. I don't worry about TPG sets. I do have some PCGS coins, but not for the sets.
Sure. I don't have an issue with it. All my sets are in Danscos. Once in there, they aren't going anywhere.
Yes, but I understand where ldhair is coming from on that issue. Even while being in the Dansco album, proof coins start to a hazey toning that most collectors find unattractive. And not to mention the hairlines that may develope from being slid into the album to begin with. But, I suppose it's your choice. Your coins, your decision. -Brian
I'll have to keep an eye on my proofs in my other sets. So far no issues, but I believe my oldest set in a Dansco has only been in an album about 3 years. They are supposed to be inert, and the slip covers are supposed to help. ??? If they start to haze up, I'm pretty sure it will happen before I get my 95w!
