Yep, very recent. Also has a strongly rotated reverse. Suspected to be by far the rarest of the WAM's. Haven't found one yet in about 10 boxes of looking for one. I believe only one is known right now.

Next question, how do you tell between a proof style strike and a business strike? I can't tell by those pictures.

Sorry if I'm asking too many questions. I know nothing about this so now is a good time to learn!

I never heard of a 1996 WAM. Glory be, I'm speechless.(not really) You know when I first joined CT someone made a post to me and said to" keep lookinjg for that 1996 WAM" and I fell for it for a couple of weeks. It's eerie now that one has been discovered.
    Congrats Bobbeth.

No, no, it's just a raw proof die that was used in business strike production. It didn't undergo the polishing and acid etching that proofs get. The difference is in the AM of AMERICA. On a "Wide AM" there is noticeable separation between the letters, while the "Close AM" variety shows little to no separation. The pics on the link I gave you show the difference nicely.

They switched from the WAM dies to the CAM dies for business strikes in 1993, so any coin dated 1993 and later with a Wide AM is a keeper. Same for Close AM's dated 1992 and earlier... although I only know of 1992's and nothing earlier.

Inversely, there are 1998 and 1999 proof cents displaying the Close AM, when they're supposed to be the Wide AM die. Those are worth about $200 last I looked.

Here's a couple links to the 1996 WAM thing.

So, exactly how noticeable to the naked eye are WAMs and CAMs? I always check my 92s, 98s,99s, and 00s when I go through boxes, but I am just afraid that I won't notice or something...

I notice them right away. I mean, you gotta train your eye (350k cents is a lot of training) but once you've done maybe 4-5 boxes, it's really easy to pick them out, at least it was for me. I can't say I've never missed one, but I can say that it's relatively improbable that I'd miss one. The big tip-off for me is the shape of the A. It's very different between the two types, and learning the shape of the A on the WAM can help you figure out if it's a wide or not without being able to see the spacing clearly due to dirt or weird toning, etc.

It's solid, a little above average.

I'm falling behind my goal for the year of 1 silver dime per day... I currently sit at 104 silver dimes in 149 days... gonna need to some good luck to catch up over the next few months. Last year, I pulled 270 silver dimes in 248 days... starting with the day I first created my spreadsheet.

Yea, Merc that's what I'm worried about, having never physically handled one to see the difference makes me wonder if I would not notice it. Hopefully with my graduation gifts, I'll be able to do some better searching. I'm going to go for halves this week!

You've definitely handled Wide AM's. Just grab a 1990 or 1991 cent and check that out, it'll be a WAM. So will your typical 1992... and yes, they look the same.

So there really would be the same amount of space in a 98, 99, and 00 as there would be in one of the "normal" WAMs? Hopefully I'll find one soon, now that I have the funds maybe I can.

$210 in dimes over the weekend...skunk. I even went back thru them looking for 1982 no P. Hop this week bring me better luck. I'm going to pick up a box today if they have them.

    Merc,

Have you noticed worse luck on dimes? I see you had 2 boxes in a row with no silver. I did not have a good weekend with dimes although I searched only $210 worth I usually come up with something. I need a nice box with 5 in there or something. Can't find halves anywhere!

Can beat finding silver in $30 worth of dimes! It just takes one for me to add to the collection and I'm happy...although more is always better

Yeah, dimes are pretty dry. Rolled the dice again today and came up empty. Dimes are gonna get ignored for a bit now unless I'm buying a bag off a machine or something.

EDIT: Opened a box of cents, and there's a 1919 on the end of a roll... hopefully that bodes well for the rest of the box.

Terrible, is that 3 Dime boxes in a row with nothing? Is that typical?

I forgot to ask, do you ever look for or have found 1982 no P dime? Anyone?
