The "S" is about as much of a hint as I can give regarding whether if it foreign or not... the mark above the "S" is not a digit.
Oh, I think I've got it! It's a U.S. Gold piece?!?! Haha, if I'm wrong, I still won't give up! I am a very determined person. :burger-flip: -Brian
Uggggggghhhh. This is difficult! Watch, it's probably something ridiculously easy that has just seemed to slip my mind (that gives you the hint that I am doing this without any books or internet sources). I think I'll just wait until the show day and be surprised . I'll look like a fool if I keep guessing and guessing it incorrectly ! -Brian
Bingo! The display will be on the San Francisco Copper Coinage of 1909 and the following will be displayed: 1909-S Indian Head Cent MS65RD 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent MS65RD 1909-S Lincoln Cent MS66RD 1909-S/S Lincoln Cent FS-1501 MS64RB 1909-S/S Lincoln Cent FS-1502 S/Horizontal S MS65RD 1909-S U.S.-Philippines One Centavo MS63RB It's pretty cool that all of these low mintage semi-key and key-dates were made during the same year in the same building in San Francisco! I really hope some of you will take the opportunity to check them out and also check out the other collector exhibits that will be on display. I'll be at the show on Thursday and on Saturday and would be happy to meet up with any forum members and give a personal tour of the coin display. Only a couple of days to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm in! I work about 300 yards away from the Convention Center, so I'm gonna try to get away for a long lunch tomorrow so I can feed my addiction! I'm also thinking about selling some 90% silver. What do you think, is it wishful thinking to believe I might get melt for it? I've seen a couple articles recently in several coin publications about dealers at shows paying melt....any dealers out there in this boat? Just curious...
You know, I was thinking in the back of my mind that that was what it was! That's why I initially asked if one was foreign. Looks like someone beat me to the the punch though. Either way, sounds like a great set and I can't wait to check it out! Hope to see you there! -Brian
The last Long Beach show I attended, I stumbled across a dealer that was buying from attendees for nearly melt. I have no idea how the man could make a profit from buying for such a high price! I sold 3 Franklin halves to that dealer. I believe it was a younger man and his father running the booth. Maybe you'll stumble across them at some point. Hope to see you there! -Brian
Set up and dealer day was yesterday. I'm hearing that the cheaper tables in the new "F" Section and the daily tables in the back of the room are very popular and have drawn some of the dealers back to the show, but there are some other dealers who have chosen to "walk" the show rather than take a table (i.e., Angel Dees). I'm headed back out in a little while, so hope to see some of you forumites there - be sure to stop by and say hi! My newly purchased "pile" of PCGS Indian cents (rattlers, OGH, Eagle Eye Photo Sealed, etc.) that I bought a couple weeks ago in Portland are out and ready for new homes!
I went yesterday (and will go again tomorrow) and I had a decent time at the show. This particular show I didn't think was nearly as exciting as Long Beach has been in the past. PCGS didn't bring any major collection to display like they typically do, so that was a bummer. Also, as Charmy noted, many major dealers didn't show up to this show or instead chose to walk the show instead of being set up. In the front half of the convention center, it seemed like 20% or so of the tables were empty. That said, there are many many awesome coins being displayed by some of the dealers!!! The highlight for me was seeing two of the Indian Cents that were struck on $2.5 gold planchets!! I'm not much of an error collector, but those are probably the coolest coins I've seen and to see two of them in a case side by side was really neat. Another dealer had a 5-coin Pan-Pac set that was all in slabs, but also had one of the original copper frames that the sets were originally sold in. Pretty sweet!
Jus t got back today. Awesome Show! sold a bunch of stuff, and bought one seated liberty quarter. (1842 o) Like others I noticed some empty tables. The show overall looked pretty active; I noticed that a lot of people were trading gold. Liked it better than last years. (on friday)
I went Thursday and came home with this (1797 C-3b). What you can't see is the lettered edge that overlaps the thin planchet. It is a rarity 4 (< 200 known).
I am having a great show! Also for igradems70 I have several PL/DMPl in my case including a 63DMPL 84-CC PCGS. I bought a bunch of coins today, sold some, and took many photos.
