I was wondering if anyone else had come across these. I found it at a friends coin shop
yesterday. And if any one knows who put these out? just trying to find some information about it. I have never seen or heard of this one.
Pretty cool design for the coin of our nations capitol.

    Thanks

    Terry

  3. I have no idea about this coin but really like the reverse design. Duke Ellington is cool but this would have been a nice design for the 2009 DC quarter. The date is 2004 so perhaps it is some prototype? TC

    TopCat,
The Prototype thing is what some guy told the friend of mine that owns the coin shop.
Something about the guys son works for the U.S. Mint and gave them to his dad
a while back. The type of story one hears quite often.
So the two coins have been sitting in a bowl
on my desk at the shop for quite some time. along with other odd things that tend to accumulate in coin shops. They have been a question mark in the shop for quite awhile. You know, You hear the story and think Well maybe.I was doing some sorting yesterday and happen to notice them so I brought one home and took some shots of it to see if anyone knew anything about them.

I too just found one of these quarters. I found it in the cash register at my place of business. Obviously someones used it to purchase something. I was going to take it to the bank, but after searching all over, I can't find anything on the net that says this quarter exists, until now. Have you figured out what it is?

    Great song!

I was searching online for anything regarding this coin, and your post is the only thing I've found. Very odd... The one I have is in almost non-circulated condition. It's beautiful, I can actually see myself in it. It'd be interesting to find out more about it though.

I know Daniel Carr had a few prototype designs fo the Washington DC quarter (other than the satirical one he made). I don't know if this is one of them or if he struck pieces of his prototypes. One thing that argues against it being from Carr is I don't see his DC logo on it anywhere. (Unless it is masquerading as the windows at the top of the Washington Monument. hey seem out of scale to the rest of the monument)

This one is from the Liberian Mint and has The 51st State at the bottom.

There's pretty clearly a D near the apex of the memorial.

My money is on these being a Carr fantasy piece.

Don't waste your money on that bet. Remember Carr is clearly flaunting the HPA by not marking his fakes COPY.

I was just searching on google to see what one of these was worth and stumbled on this forum. I bought mine from the national collectors mint a while back. Here's mine

No offense intended, but buying from the National Collector's Mint is a waste of money. It's no different than buying from Coin Vault.

Well that explains it. It looked like Daniel Carr's work, but it isn't listed on his website as one of his prior pieces. It's because he didn't strike them. I remember he was working for NCM for a while but they parted company and not on the best of terms.

That phrase on the reverse is kind of disturbing,
    "JUSTICE TO ALL".
Obviously a fake/fantasy item. Isn't it illegal to place the dollar amount - quarter dollar - on the token?

It's OK as long as the "copy" stamp complies with HPA guidelines, and in this case it appears to comply.

I haven't seen the obverse of the National Mint version. The 1st one is an unknown from a coin shop marked COPY, the 2nd one is Liberian Mint marked COPY, the 3rd item shows the reverse of the National Mint version of this item, not the obverse, so I don't think anyone can tell if it is, in fact, inscribed COPY. I don't see a D near the Washington Monument apex on the 3rd item, so it looks like a different "token" than the first and second ones.
