Hmmm, much better, I'll say high 65 even low 66.

 

If that's the case, it might be worth dropping it off at my local PCGS/NGC submission center tomorrow. And then wait 3 or 4 months to get the coin back.

ldhair, I love the 2 cent piece you posted ... WOW. The color inside the wreath is fantastic.

This is the 2 cent piece I just bought on Monday. I've been looking for an nice looking example for a long time and I really fell in love with the color on this. (Coin bought from thepennylady.com, Photo by bluccphotos.com)

Here's a dollar I picked up recently. Except for my large cents I don't have any 18th century US coins (if you don't count reales).

WOW!!! That is stunning! That's as nice and clean a 1799 Dollar that I've seen. Was it graded? Is that an AU ?

Well now you have your large cents and this dollar from the 18th century. I have not been able to break into the 1700's for US coins ... but I want to ... someday!

 

PCGS slab.......

 

Right. PCGS. I think it's properly graded as a VF30. I like that it has clean surfaces and no distracting flaws. It's a pretty typical early dollar. Probably cleaned at one point, like most all of them, and now retoned.

Stunning dollar, Lance; I'd be happy to own it. Everything I've seen of yours on CT has superb eye appeal; congrats on the careful work. I have nothing from the 18th C—too pricey!

Early dollars is an area I'd be reluctant to venture into because of the difficulty of finding pleasing yet original surfaces.

 

Gorgeous 2 cent, Winged. I've been looking for one for type for about 2 years and still haven't been able to pull the trigger (other than on a stunning RD one I ultimately lost on Heritage). At this point I'm really reluctant to buy anything but BN copper and have concluded that buying in hand is the only way I'm going to be comfortable.

 

Here's my recent pickup (not my photos), MS66FH. It's a stunner in hand but didn't come cheaply: I paid 15% above retail. Frankly, I have reservations about it, which is unusual, and am considering re-listing it; any thoughts on the coin and/or the purchase are welcome.

What are your reservations about the SLQ? Luster looks stunning.

Is it the grade? Bag hits? What's on the reverse, eagle's wing?

Luster and strike are unimprovable IMO and I think, given the eye appeal, it easily holds the grade. It's the few hits on the sash and breast and tiny russet spot (drapery next to shield) that bug me. Long story short, I had it between this and an equally nice, but for different reasons, 17P. I decided to go with the better mintmark. Now I think I would've been just as happy with the P, at half the price—or perhaps, since neither felt "perfect," I should've let them both go. Have you been there?

 

I think everyone has been there at one point in time. I am getting better at letting them go if I don't see what I want to see. Sometimes that makes it tough on some of the varieties to complete my albums.

I hear you about the little details. I bought a 1917 Type 1 MS64FH SLQ last year (overpaid a bit as well, but it's a much cheaper coin). I liked it but it had 2 black carbon spots on the obverse that just bugged me more and more each passing day. I eventually just had to sell it (at a loss). I should have sent it back right when I got it as the sellers photo didnt show the spots. So I am looking for another nice type 1.

I think you should be very pleased with what you bought and stop second guessing it. It's gorgeous! Move along.
