I see what you mean but would need clearer pics to be sure... Read this: http://www.lincolncentresource.com/doubledies/1970Sddo1.html
I have a coin in my collection that appears to be exactly like this one but mine is not all beat up. The doubling is only on the date and I always thought mine was a large over small date but it may also be MD. If anyone wants to see a photo of my coin I may be able to dig out the coin and get a photo of it.
You are right . the doubling on the other coin looks wider than mine. this is the first time I have looked at my coin in a long time. I would venture to say that both of these coins are machine doubling.on real doubled die coins the doubling on every coin from that doubled die is identical in every way to each other because the doubling is on the die itself. Machine doubled coins are almost never exactly the same.
What I do to figure out if a coin has MD or DD is to just compare it to a 1955 classic error and compare.
Here's one. Does it look like yours ? I believe it to be MD The "9" on a large and small date is a dead giveaway. Compared side by side the small date has a very much more closed loop. Neither of the coins shows that closed type 9 that would indicate a small date underneath. I think you have an MD also, but it might be worth the cost to send it to Wexler to find out for sure. gary
