Maybe I should have gotten a job at the Airport

So I was talking to my sister about her job at the airport and she was talking about the weird coins people pay with and that she has all kinds of coins she got out of tips. I asked her like what? She said she had one lady give her a "penny" and she didnt think it was real. It turned out to be a half cent. She described it as saying half cent on the back and on the front it had a lady wearing something that looked like a crown.

She wanted me to find out if half cents can be worth a lot. It was in pretty good condition and told her we would need to have it graded. She didnt like the idea of paying to have someone tell you how much a coin is worth.

This all leads to my question: How much are half cents usually worth ranging from bad, good, to excellent condition?

How about a year and/or picture??
They're usually worth anything north of $8, in "good" condition I would guess around $50-$60

If it's a US half cent, even a AG example can be worth a minimum of $60 or more. I've yet to see one priced lower, though I keep looking.

The half cent sounds like something from the British Caribbean territory

its a US half cent. I would take a picture but I dont have a camera. I believe she said the year was 1851. She works as a waitress at a resturant in the airport. She has a collection of foreign coins she got as tips. I hope she gives em to me because she doesnt collect.

I hesitate to to think that someone might try to short change dear sister, but they may have, in fact, short changed themselves. :)

Pics? Yup, I know you don't have a camera. But a scanner. Perhaps you have a scanner? :)

Never seen a half cent start at that low a price, even in AG. Thats what a dealer might give you for it, but retail you're looking at $50, bottom, and thats on rare occasion.

Hmmm, I'm just quoting the Blue-book. What would you say for 1826 in XF would go for?

Thats about right for blue book, but thats dealer cost, not retail. I'm not saying you may not ever find any at say $30, but if you do I'd grab them if I were you.

As for a 1826 in XF I'd say about $125. But if the color is nice and it's well struck, it could go $200 or more.

Well, I'm glad to hear that, I was under the impression that it was only worth 70 or so...

Half Cents, based on their relatively low mintages, are grossly undervalued. And, unfortunately, can be had in G/VG condition for as little as $30. Here's an example of one that I recently bid on that sold in that range (I was not the high bidder):
