?

Is it a good idea to collect the Prez coins to sell in a complete series collection?

Yes, we did de-rail it, Ken. SOOO.......(now that my B's are going to the Cup Finals!!!!), we really havent heard from real supporters of 'collecting' them. Remember, we're not judging the 'why' you are collecting them, we're judging the 'what', the series.

Something that hasn't been touched on....how do you feel about the obverses themselves? Do you think the image does the particular Prez justice? I can't recall, and heading out to celebrate (B's WIN!...lol), so I'm not gonna look it up, but one looks like Larry Fine of the 3 Stooges! I, personally think they have no real artistic appeal. Give me something like the 'Liberty' obverse of the prez's with no wives. Peace-out till tomorrow people...be dancin' in the streets of Beantown tonight!!!

Dem Boston Bums won? Well, never was much of a hockey fan. Bruins always seemed to beat up on the "Rangers" but I never noticed much.

As to the obverse designs? This year I think the mint did a whole lot better in portraying the 'busts' of the presidents. They seem more real to me and much more believable in design......I like 'em. :)

I disagree with your logic. If paper Dollars were discontinued, it wouldn't be until AFTER a suitable supply of Dollar coins was made available and distributed to banks. If there were suddenly no more paper Dollars, there would be Billions of face value coins available commercially at face value. That wouldn't do much for the value of (collected) hoarded coins.

Remember I mentioned time value of money? If you bought a $25 roll of each president, buy the end of this year you will have spent $375. but you would need to be able to sell them for around $400 just to break even due to inflation and the loss of purchasing power. By the end of next year you'll have $500 invested and need to get $540 to break even. (These figures are based on the governments usual 3% CPI figure. If you go by real world you'd have to get even more.) End of 2013 $625 in, need to get $685 out. 2014 $750 in, $834 out. And so on.

This is probably the most compelling reason to STOP collecting the Prez series.

    Thanks everyone for your opinions.

I have finally made up my mind --- I will be taking all my Prez rolls and trucking them into my bank!

I probably have a couple thousand bucks right there waiting for me.

But I'm also going to sell on Feebay

    2007/2008/2009 Presidential proof sets
    2008/2009 annual silver mint sets
Braille, Americans with Disabilities, Boy Scout silver dollars
    Lincoln Lp2/3/4/5/Silver proofs

I have too much dough tied up at the moment

That's not real rare for something that don't circulate and will be available in pristine condition for years to come. Still, I'm obligated to complete my roll collection since it's what I set out to do.

    Welcome to the forum........

Yea, I jumped on the boat too. I think they are interesting and have collected a roll of each president from each mint and have a subscription for 25 proof sets a year from the mint. I don't really think they will ever demand a premium like the statehood quarters did simply because the general public is unaware that they even exist. I continue to get all of the coins because I like them and have several nieces and nephews who will get a complete set for Christmas one year. I hate shopping (except for coins).

I jumped off the boat and liquidated all of my Presidential Dollars and started collecting the Silver Proof Sets for the years. If I'm going to have to pay a premium to continue to collect the presidential coins I might as well get some silver with the deal. All I really wanted anyway was a pristine complete set to begin with.
Only time will tell if this was a good idea or not, but I'd rather spend money on the Ike's and SBA's right now.

I liquidated my presidential rolls because I was getting the complete sets in every mint proof/circulation set anyway. Why tie up the dollars in repetition?

I have stopped buying them just because there are many other coins I'd rather buy. but some day soon I will want to start them up again to fill my dansco album full of them. do I think it will make me rich ? No. the main reason I started the set was to learn the other presidents names that I never knew or learned about. do it for fun. I think the possible only profit to made is in the highest graded presidential coins. find other people to trade with. remember have FUN doing it.

before you take them to the bank for face value.... try selling them at a coin show for just a little more money. I know a guy in Las Vegas that would give you more than face value for your rolls. he actually makes a good profit on rolls. i usually buy rolls from him and pick out the best 3 coins for my dansco albums and take the rest of the coins back to the bank to deposit them into my checking account.

as long as the US mint put them in Mint+Silver Proof sets I guess I will end up with the whole set sealed in Mint+Proof set.

but if the US Mint had made the Prez dollar out Silver they would have been a hit!?!.
but being brass +??whatever is what the mint did + that 90% of the reason the set Failed!!

In several other countries, brass (or similar alloy) coins are the "mid range" pieces, with copper(-style) coins used for low denominations and Cu-Ni or bimetallic for higher denominations. Well, since the US only had "copper" (for the penny) and "Cu-Ni" (regardless of actual composition) for the others, why not use brass for $1 coins? (Works fine in Canada.)

And no, silver for circulation coins is not exactly an option. The reason why the US 1 dollar coin failed is, quite simply, the continued use of low value paper money. As for the "presidential" coins ... well, I like the Sacagawea pieces (especially the newer ones with different designs) better. Also, not being from the US, I don't know many of the earlier presidents. Stop collecting them now that we finally come across some who are more familiar? Nah. :D

  18. I try and maintain a complete dollar collection, so by default I have been somewhat dragged into collecting them. I must say it has not been the most pleasant experience. Trying to keep up with business strikes, proofs, satin finishes, mintmarks, positions A & B, and all those edge errors has been very taxing. My collecting budget has been severely deverted from upgrading the classics. Thank goodness there is only 4 years left to this madness. After that, I can go back to updating the new Sacagaweas, and work on the earlier dollars.

Quite a few collectors, in countries where edge inscriptions are not common, seem to do that. Oh well, if they want to. :)
