To say I had a good week last week would be an understatement! While I was on a guys golf trip I was also bidding live over the phone on a couple pieces in a big auction in Dallas.

I am happy to say I won 2 of the 3 lots I was bidding on and have now come as close as I may come to completing my NY East Tennessee Iron Company collection. The 1st lot was the $5 remainder note. I have only been able to find 1 other $5 and it was also a remainder and in much worse condition. I have seen no others despite an extensive search! I found this example in December and have been waiting patiently for the auction ever since.

The other note I was missing was the 50 cent fractional. It was part of a four piece lot that contained the other three fractionals that I already had examples of in high grade. I wanted a better example of the 5 cent fractional due to a reverse centering issue I have with the one I already owned. The new one is centered perfectly but unfortunately it also has two small holes from a staple. L

Now the only note I am missing from the set is the $10 note. I have seen one example sell at auction and it wasn’t pretty. (picture at the bottom) I will continue to search for a nice example, but I may never find one.

My set is the only one that is this complete that I have been able to locate. You can find the small fractionals in abundance but the larger denominations are very hard to locate.

    Hope you enjoy! J

    Best Regards ~ Darryl

These examples below are not my notes and are the only other large denomination notes I have seen from NT ET Iron Co..

Congrats Darryl! This is a really nice regional collection. Say wasn't the East Tennessee RR one of the stock certifs that matched your cylinder die?

Thanks SM, I agree, the portraits are very well done! I appreciate the comments, it has been a fun set to hunt down and buy!

For those that do not remember, this set was inspired by a really great CT member that gifted me the .25 cent note in the center. It was a very gracious gift and the collection will always be a reminder of his generosity and friendship!

Here are a couple shots of the entire group together:

I would like to get either that one or the one from Vermont that is similar but from a couple of years earlier for my notaphilic harem. The 5 cent note is one of my favourite vignettes from that late 1860's era.

If you were bidding on the Spink Smythe TNA sale, I went 1:1 on a very rare medal.

It was last weeks Spink Smythe auction. The other phone bid I was set up for was item 355, a McKinley signed pesidential document. The engravings were really nice and the size (18x20) would have been perfect for a spot in my home office.

I also looked at a couple British Trade Dollars but did not set up a item to bid on. I think it was item 86 that had my interest. I talked about it with the auctioneer when they called for the McKinley piece. He had set the prices in the catalog for the coins and he said that market (British Trade Dollars) is on fire! He said the Chineese were buying them all as they have such a strong connection with their use. He said all of the BTD went way above the high estimates. One pictured in the catalog went for 8.5K. How does someone pay 8.5K for a 1 ounce silver coin?

Congrats on your buy! The people at Spinks are really nice to deal with.

What a great job you have done on this collection, Darryl.
Just one question for you, is your swing as good as your eye?

    Thank you Rick!!!

Golf Swing - ROTFL - Heck No but I did happen to make it over the water on this shot. The catalog of what is wrong with my swing is longer than the catalog of my collection. The only thing going for me is my superior eye-hand coridination. 30 years of throwing darts at a pretty high level helps me make contact when no human should be able to do so with the way I swing a club. About the only human that has a swing worse than mine is Charles Barkley. Just look at my hands in this shot, if I rolled my right any further under my left, I could grab my left thumb from the other side. This year I am committed to fixing it so that I can go back next year and show them all up. :) I also have to move 20 off my mid-section and move it up to my sholders.

SpinkSmythe are indeed great to deal with. Think the Chinese are going to go crazy over the TNA auction? Should see some of the lots in the Lyn Knight Auction in a couple of weeks. I am watching one lot but expect to get blown out of the water with what I would bid for it. There are more Ming dynasty notes in that auction than I have ever seen in one auction before.

Oh, BTW if you like autographs etc of political etc figures should check out this weekend's Goldbergs auction - some cool stuff. I just wish I could find the Valentina Tereshkova(female USSR cosmonaut) gold medal that I have been looking for for several years - though they do have a lot of fascinating space memorabilia.

My annual budget doesn't support much beyond the paper currency items I show here but the McKinley piece caught my eye! Wish I had the extra money to pick it up but the timing was bad. I need to save up for the summer show in Chicago so I will not even tempt myself by looking at the Goldberg catalog. Thanks for the information though! I really need to pay more attention to these larger auctions! There are a couple autographs I would like to pick up as it realted to currency and coins but that will have to wait.

    Have a great weekend!

That's a great series of notes you've put together Darryl. I try to do the same with my obsoletes, but don't have any completed yet. As you know though, I haven't been a serious currency collector for long (I am now). I'll keep my eye out for a decent example and let you know if I see anything. I'm going to the Whitman show in Baltimore next month and they always have a lot of currency guys there, so who knows. Congratulations on your accomplishment.

Thanks Bruce, please do keep an eye out for the 50 cent and the 10 dollar note. I would be really happy to find either in CT or better. When I am in Chicago it will be one of the notes I am looking for.

    best regards

Thanks Steve! When I am in Chicago this August I am going to canvas all of the dealers that sell obsolete to see if they know of one. Hopefully I will get lucky.
