WESH.com Orlando, Fla. May 27, 2011 NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- A man's rare coin collection worth about $1 million was scattered along Interstate 95 when the collector's car was involved in a rollover crash near mile marker 250 on Thursday evening. A Boca Raton couple was heading north to a coin show in Jacksonville when the back passenger-side tire blew out in Volusia County. The SUV rolled, flipping as many as five times, police said. It says that the dealer was on his way to coinshow in Jacksonville. Did anybody here attend that show? Is it a big show?
I wish I had a metal detector.. I would try and help with the recovery. It's already bad enough that they both were hurt. I just hope who ever find's some of the coins will have a heart and give them back to the owner's who have sufferd enough already.
Yikes! Looks like some dirt fisherman stepped in to help out and the state troopers are watching the area which is good. I didn't know that having a blow-out would flip your car though, yikes.
If you are traveling at a high rate of speed a blowout is very dangerous regardless of which tire blows out.
This is reminiscent of a 1962 car crash in North Carolina that involved George O. Walton, and his 1913 Liberty nickel. Mr. Walton was killed in the wreck, but the nickel was recovered and given to his sister, who kept it in a closet for 41 years after she had been told it was a fake. http://www.pcgs.com/articles/article_view.chtml?artid=6168&universeid=313&type=1
A vehicle with a high center of gravity (like many SUVs) is vulnerable to rolling over if it loses a tire while being driven at speed.
It gets worse... WFTV Crew Finds Marijuana At Crash Scene Let's hope that it was only coincidence. I have to imagine that packages of marijuana aren't all that uncommon along I-95 in Florida...
What a mess and a terrible situation. I guess the press coverage was inevitable but I'll bet the couple would've preferred not to have it.
Forensics should easily be able to determine, or dispel, a link to the accident victims. Well, maybe not easily, but let's hope.
A couple years ago on I 94 a mint truck dumped a load of nickels. This year coins on I 95. In 2013 maybe coins will dump on I 96 .
Thank you for the update. I was telling the story to my to kids. They both agreed that it would be like going on a treasure hunt. They also feel bad that there are so many dishonest people who would try and make money off of someone elses misfortune.
Fishing boats often come upon dumped bales of the plantchik. It must be a temptation for folks who are trying to eke out a living in this tough economy to not pick one up.
I hate to here about the wreck and the damages !!!! :devil:but just think about what Tax the Us could reap 1/3 of the war drugs would end less money spent on fighting a never-ending Battle & Tax they could impose if our Government would decriminalize Marijuana
Maybe I can finally discover a Saint Gaudens Double Eagle or an 09-S VDB with my Garrett Ace 250. I really hope they recover all of the coins, because that would be a HUGE hit to take.
