Thanks Merc, If I'm at 8 slv dimes hopefully my 1st Merc will be coming along sometime soon. You tend to find your Merc's in BWR's? I get Strings & Son rolls only. I have never seen any other BWR's.

The $200 Nickels Fed Bag Search Yesterday

I have been searching the cents for quite awhile - getting kind of boring. Last week I bought a $100 box of nickels and turned up a dateless Buffer, a few early Jeffersons some S mints - and really I like the find vs. reject ratio a bit better than cents.

So this week my bank teller said they would have a bag going back to the Fed unless I bought it - these are all cashed in merchants receipts that get fed into their coin counter and credited to the merchant's accounts. The bags are in the amount of $200.

Yesterday I went in and saved the bag from the infernal Federal Reserve bank in Chicago and instead brought them home.

    Wowzer!

    7 Buffers:

    1920
    1935
    1936
    1938-D
    3 dateless

    Jeffersons

    1940
    1941 x 4
    1942
    1943-P silver!
    1944-P silver!
    1945-P silver
    1946
    1948 x 3
    1950
    1954-D x 2
    1954
    1956 x 2
    1957 x 2
    1957-D x 2
    1958-D x 3
    1959-D x 2
    1959 x 2

    San Francisco minted nickels:

    1940
    1941
    1943 - silver!
    1947
    1952-S x 2
    1954-S
    1968 x 7
    1969 x 6
    1970 x 16

    Canada
1980 - only save because the ones from before 1981 are worth double face melt right now.

Then there was an orphan cent that somehow found it's way into the bag:confused: but then it was a 1974-S:cool:

I am still ecstatic about finding 7 Buffalos in the whole lot. I would have never thought I would have found one in circulated nickels until last week, then I found the one. I cannot believe I found 7 of them, but can only conjecture that because of where I live(community with lots of older folks) that maybe it should not be so unusual. None of the Buffalos will win any beauty or grading contests but I am happy with them.

Ran out at lunch and hit 5 banks...found

    10 Ikes - no silver
    about 40 loose halves.... 1 40% 1968.

Hoping that's a sign of things to come for the weekend trip!

Hit my credit union yesterday and they had $44 in halves. I found 2, a 1967 and a 1968. I also got a few rolls of dimes and found 2 roosies, a 1951 and a 1962.
This was my FIRST time searching rolls from a bank looking specifically for old coins. It was fun.:smile

Some nice finds, everyone! Especially teknowaffle, that's a great loose find. I also have to say there are some good tips and info in the recent posts. :)

Yep, almost happened to me last night. I'm more careful now, and I have started looking for '02-present NIFC's; before I knew to look for them, my first box had a bunch... well, live and learn.

Full report on Friday, but wanted to gloat on the box of H's I went through last night: 11 x 40's, three in one roll! Also found a SBA dollar in one roll... WTH? The best part was opening them in front of the tube with The Wife; she was skeptical about the searching - not anymore. :D

The real shame was finding dozens of S marks from the early 70's - they were all smeared with something that gave them an awful tarnish.

Still got a box of H's to go through today...

Stopped at 6 banks at lunch today. Out of about $50 in loose halves... nothing. Did pick up 2 ikes.

Hit a bank on my way to OCMD and no halves anywhere, but I scored 29 Ikes. Total for today is 39 Ikes. Which brings my 2 week hunting total to 42 (actually 44 but I gave a bicentenial to each of my kids). Now my question is what the **** to do with these things? None are Silver.

What years am looking for that have the error on the back? I have 13 1972's right now?

OK OK OK! Peer pressure. I had to work late and just walked in the door from baseball practice. I am branching out to ease the traffic at Bob and my banks as they are starting to shut us down. I picked up a box and when I opened it, I saw the back of a Franklin and 4 1964's looking at me. I did not open any rolls (My kids do that) but I checked each roll and set aside 11 enders. 9 1964's, 1 Franklin, and one 40%.

Turns out it was my best box ever and tied Bob's best at 87 silver halves...

I will post the count right after this. Have not uploaded a pic in while so want to make sure it works...

    The loot

Not the best pic and I am not sure how to make it bigger but anyway:

    9 Franklins
    26 40%'ers
    52 1964's :eek::eek::eek:

Oh, and by the way, all but about 7 of them are BU.

Just under a grand of silver. :hail:
Not a bad box at all.

Awesome foinds Scottishmoney! Maybe they will let you do this as a regular thing, buying the bag?

I do have a bank that let me buy halves they were going to ship back. I bought 2 ($100) bags. Both ended up being skunks. But the thought did cross my mind to consider buying bags of Nickels, Dimes, or Cents if they let me. I might just try this. Probably have to give them my phone number, and see if they will call. I don't have an account there so they might not deal with me once they find out. But it's worth a shot. That's awesome to score all those Buffs, and some Silvers to boot!

Whoa and not to be outdone Erin pulls this monster box! That is awesome, must have been a lot fun seeing all those pop out. I'm on my 17th total box I've ever done. I figure one of these days if I keep doing this stuff enough something is bound to hit. Congratulations on your finds!

Holy crap Merc, that's a lot of area to cover! You must set out with $5K in your pockets LOL. If I could I would, but I don't have enough money to have circulating like that. Definately envious. You will some day need to build a money bin a'la Scrooge McDuck from that cartoon to store all your old roll search finds!

Nah, most banks won't have anything around here. I've planned out two dumps along the way (Whoo, TD Bank!) and will probably have in the realm of $1750-$2k on me for the duration... I can't really afford lugging that kind of cash around either, but my big bill (rent) isn't due until next week so I have some extra cash for now. Even if I do hit a big run of halves, the dumps are situated as such that I shouldn't run out of cash, and my girlfriend is coming with me, so I'll have access to her cash too if necessary. But yeah, should be about 3-4 hours, minimum.

Sounds like you got it all figured out, good planning with the dumps on the way. That's cool that your girlfriend likes to do it too.

She doesn't... I just use certain bargaining chips with her in order to get her to tag along. Her car is twice as gas efficient as mine, so... She does enjoy whenever I find silver, though, so if I get on a roll or pull some collection dump, she'll be stoked.
