I just bought a few coins at a garage sale ( 50 cents for all...they looked to be worth more than that!) However, I know nothing about what I just purchased and am wondering if anyone is familiar with any one, or all, of these coins. Any help is appreciated! I would just like to know what these are, and possibly the worth if you happen to know! *They are a little aged/greenish... but this is my first buy of old coins and I don't even know how to properly clean them yet, and I dont want to risk ruining them at all. I'm a little overcautious!* Thank you! COIN #1 ~ Lion crest with CL XV Side 1: COIN #1 ~ Skilling 1/2 1867 Side 2: COIN #2 ~ Chinese type characters Side 1: COIN #2 ~ Dragon with "TAI-CHING-TI-KUO Copper Coin" Side 2: COIN #3 ~ I actually have no idea what kind of character/picture is on either side of this coin #3 Side 1~ #3 Side 2~ COIN #4 ~ Looks like a coin from a similar region as number 3, but again - I have no idea what character/picture this is either. #4 Side 1~ #4 Side 2~
We would need to know the sizes to identify some of these. #1 Denmark? #2 China 10 Cash 1905-09(?) #3 Ottoman Empire (Turkish) Egypt 20 Paras AH 1277 (1861) + 3 years #4 Ottoman Empire (Turkish) Egypt ? Paras AH 1223 (1808) + 26 years #4 is pretty worn and the size could identify the denomination
Coin 1 ~ Skilling is just under 2cm, 1.9cm diameter. Coin 2~ Copper Coin is just under 3cm, 2.9cm diameter. Coin 3 ~ about 3.2cm diameter. Coin 4 ~ 3.9cm diameter. These are just estimates...used the ruler I had nearby Hope it helps to better determine what these are!
Very nice haul! From the pics, they appear to be the 'real deal', and worth at least .50c. Sorry I don't know much about these specific coins, but I'm sure anyone here would have given at least that for them. Never know, a member might point out one that stands out. I don't know much about these particular coins, but the 1st one is probably fairly common. As pointed out earlier, it is either Denmark or Scandinavian.
That sounds too small... ??? Can you compare them to current US coins? Like dime, cent, nickel, etc... Because 1.9mm is TINY, even for a coin. I don't know off the top of my head, but I think even a dime is 11mm, so the first coin would fit 6 wide across a dime if it were 1.9mm.
DO NOT CLEAN THEM! It is a rare occaision that cleaning or wiping a coin is appropriate. Almost always devalues a coin.
+1 While there are appropriate ways to clean coins, most coins that a non-collector would think are "dingy" or "dirty" are just fine. Very few coins would benefit from cleaning, and it has to be done correctly. On a side note, a friend of mine's dad found a barber dime in a house they had just bought (This was a while ago). It was a decent grade, but it was discolored. After repeatedly telling him not to clean it, because he'd damage it, he of course still cleaned it with something. And they ended up with a ugly, luster-less, bland barber that could have been a decent looking coin.
I looked at Badthad's "DO NOT CLEAN COINS" post, and it appears to me that he is recommending a PH neutral verdigris removing solution. IMO, that is something I might do to the worst of these, as verigris (the green stuff) appears to be the major problem here.
