I mailed off a package Registered mail. 84 coins. They lost it. I am now trying to figure out what a couple of the coins were worth. They are making me jump through hoops to get values with some kind of proof of value. A sale etc.

Did you win these off of ebay? The receipt of what you paid for them is likely all you will receive back form insurance. Other wise people would mailing a $1 coin and say it was worth millions

Any more details on how and when it was lost? Where it was heading?

Are you sure they lost it? I mean, it has a tracking number on it, they can see what the last location on that was... did they just flat out tell you "we have no clue, sorry, it's gone"?

Bought them at different coin shows over the years. The 1959 Franklin was in a mint set that also had a Type "B" Washington quarter. Found out about Franklin from "Coin Talk" cool find. The cent came out of a orginal roll only one in it.

ICG had made a deal to get all the coins graded and slabbed for $10 including varities. Mailed Priorty REGISTERED! lost between the Sunol post office and and mailing center. I was told someone will loose job over this. WOW! years of looking through coins wasted. Who ever took it if they did not know about varitities, errors etc would more than likely sell them for the silver.

The only thing the post office did was make a couple of internal calls and could not find it. USPS tracking showed accepted at Sunol post office and nothing else.

What date (or approx if you dont want to say) was it shipped? That is real bad to lose a package that quick. I had one sit for 3 weeks once in a safe somewhere when an employee went on vacation.

Good luck on trying to determine the value of errors. I think you might have to take the value of a non-error coin to show proof. When things are really rare, there are just no comparables available. I really think a lot of private trades are not disclosed fully for IRS filing purposes. I have research a particular scarce item for months now and although one expert believes the value to be a mid 5 figure range, traders are saying less than 1k. I see a lot of motivation to undervalue rare items.

Then of course, those filing insurance claims are motivated to try and overvalue the items.

However, I think they will find them............eventually. Registered mail tracks every single person who handled the package. When they get to a final trace, they will find them. I don;t think the value of the items is worth losing a good job over ? I have known many postmen and they all would say the same thing. "Not worth it".

I wish you a lot of luck,

    gary

Thanks. I have found some sales Teletrade, Cheap Slabs, some of the coins are listed in Numismatic News monthly. I am copying everything along with letter saying the value is in the knowledge of the collector. Paying for a regular model but getting the deluxe is not a crime.

You say you sent these coins off, can I assume you sent them to a person who bought them ? If so, then what that person was paying you for the coins, meaning the entire package, should suffice as evidence of value.

edit - if this was not the situation, then realized prices from auctions for coins of the same grade should suffice. You cna get that easy enough from Heritage and other auction house records.

I was sending them in to get slabbed at ICG. I just wanted them protected so I could show them off without worrying about someone opening a flip etc. I already knew what they were more or less not values as I was not going to sell at this time. ICG gave me a deal on slabbing including FS # so that is why I sent them in. Thanks Darrow

Sent them on 4/29 and he already calling them stolen? Heck the Post Office won't even start a claim on Registered until it's been thirty days. Taking a month or longer to arrive for Registered is a bit unusual but not unknown. And expected to arrive by 5/2 is silly. Registered would never be "expected" that quickly (Anything over thirteen oz would go in what they call Priority, but would travel at the much slower Registered speed, not the faster Priority speed.). Are you sure you sent it Registered and not Priority insured? Priority would be told to be expected that fast, and is MUCH more likely to disappear. It also is more likely to not have properly updated tracking until it finally arrives.

I can't comment on the value of the coins. But what I can say, is a package of mine was delivered empty. I received the proper paperwork from the Post Office. I filled it out, and wrote in the value. I received a check within a few weeks from USPS. I was pleasantly surprised.

Keep in mind, this package had insurance on it. I hope yours did as well, not just registered.
