Like Merc said. But also look for 70S small date, 88 & 88D reverse 89,
92 P CAM as well as the D

I guess you already have a list of double dies to check for ? Because there is one 1984 D with a rotated double die that's worth a few bucks too.

I sort by decade into food storage bowls. Then take each decade and sort by year into a muffin baking pan with 12 cup holders. Then I go each tear at a time. It's an extensive search, handling each coin 3-4 times. But I don't think I miss much. lol

Searched $40 CWR's of dimes, Skunk, got excited until I pulled out a 1998 Canadian.
Oh well, getting more today on my lunch break.

Yeah, not bad, better than I've been doing lately with one exception being a box that had 4.

That's a dime for about every $80 searched. I would take those odds.

Halves seem really dry....If I can even find them. Picked up 1 single half from a teller tray, 1991P absolutely beat
The teller did say if she ever gets more she would hold them for me since I'm the only one asking. That's promising.

Well, my average is still way down... from 2.55 last year to 1.41 this year... it adds up quick.

Hey Everyone - I've been lurking and reading up on this forum for the past couple of weeks. A lot of very helpful information out here! Thanks to everyone for posting their finds and advice. I got my first box of Halves today. Will be going through them after work. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

They appear to be machine wrapped with a white wrapper with the print in a light yellow. Does anyone know who might be the company that rolled these?

Also - Merc...I see you are in the Greater Philly area. I'm in Central Chester County. I'm hoping to not step on any toes or be wasting time in banks your hitting! I'd appreciate any advice you can give. Do you ever do any auctions? There are tons around...I'm thinking of hitting a few in June?

Hey Ace... What bank did you pick up those halves from? White/Yellow is usually Fed. If it came from First National, it's definitely Fed. The only bank out in ChesCo that I have "marked" is First Niagara on Rt. 1 right past Longwood Gardens. They have promised to sell me their bag of halves when it fills up. Everything else, knock yourself out... oh and don't dump there. :p

But really, this is pretty much a free-for-all hobby... I've swung through ChesCo before, it's usually pretty dry, lots of searchers out there, although I did pull a Frankie out of a tellers tray a couple weeks ago while me and the girlfriend were on our way to lunch out in Kennett Square. My turf I search on the regular stretches from the banks in West Chester, right down 202 to Wilmington, as well pretty much all of Chadds Ford, Boothwyn, Aston, Brookhaven. Perhaps I should just show you...

Check all banks in that area pretty much once a week, minimum. As far as auctions, most stuff goes way over what I'd pay around here. If you want advice, well, just ask away.

Thanks Merc - I'm in Exton...so I have a ton to search in my back yard. I won't be riding in your turf :) I got mine at M&T....so I guess I'll see how it turns out. Some of the branches around here are pretty snarky about helping with the halves, but there's like 50-100 banks between Coatesville and KofP. So, I'm not worried. My ex lives in New Castle, DE so I may do some pilfering there when I get the kids! Thanks for the reply!

I ran all the way down the main line from Exton to just Outside of Philly in one day... I think it was something like 80 banks. Found about $10 in silver halves, mostly 40%ers, and a few cherrypicking tellers that irritated the crap outta me.

Just pulled a nice, RD '57-D out of a box of cents. :)

Well - I'll be searching in about an hour. I cracked 3 open at work just to take a look and there was nothing. Some nice Sharpie action, but no coins of note. Even if nothing pans out I'll keep trying. Bound to get something sometime.

I have bought 13 Franklins at spot and a few barely under spot at an auction in Lancaster the other night. I know I won't get rich doing it, but it's better than sitting in my savings getting me $.015%! Now I want to try the roll hunting to bring my per piece cost down dramatically...$.50/piece sounds pretty good to me! However, I enjoy the thrill of the chase at the auction. None-the-less, I'll keep my posts here limited to the Roll Hunt!

    Some starter advice for you;

If you don't have an account with TD, get one. Savings or something. Penny arcade is free for customers regardless of how much you use it... I dump probably on the order of $5k a week... minimum.

Pick a few TD banks to make your "dump" banks. I have 4. I never pick up change from those banks, I only dump there. That leaves me plenty of places to dispose of change, and gives me a ton of other places to pick up change fairly consistently. I once saw this philosophy referred to as "Don't dump where you eat." Good philosophy.

I'd love to be buying silver in auctions and whatnot, but my income doesn't justify that, sadly... for now. It's okay to go off-topic here, god knows I do it all the time in this thread... I'll talk about any good deal I get in this thread because the people who post in this thread are probably the people I know the best out of everybody here at CT. Plus, I mean, that's why we search rolls... for good deals.

    Merc,
Let's say you dump a box of dimes at TD how long does it take to count them? The machine gives you a receipt, you go to teller, cash in and then leave I would guess. There are no banks in my area that have coin counting machine, so I have to re-roll everything and spread it around. There is a TD bank 20 minutes from me so it would be like a once a week thing to cash in all the coins and buy'em up in my town during the week.
    Thanks

Merc - Already got accounts at TD. Personally, I can't stand them as a bank, but I keep them for no other reason than to dump my change. I have two accounts for my kids there that I keep about $100 in each so they don't give me a hard time.

I used to have a Vending Route here and liquidated it during my divorce about 7.5 years ago. I still have about 100 gumball machines working. I could kick myself for not searching coins earlier. I knew about the silver content, but was 'too busy' to be bothered! Well, you can rest assure that I'll be searching every quarter that comes in from my still working machines. Better late than never. I'll be dumping some change at TD on the way home just for the heck of it.

I'll let everyone know how my search goes tonight!

Depends on if I fill the bag. If not, probably 3 minutes total assuming no line. I usually fill a canvas bag and dump that, so more often than not, I'll fill a bag or two, so it's really more like 5-10 minutes depending on exactly how much. This morning, I dumped $499.50 in halves, $250 in dimes, $100 in nickels, and about $16 in cents... Took me 11 minutes... halves really slow things down since the bag fills every $100, so they just pull the machine out and we have a bit of a system down. I love these tellers. :D
I hate TD as a bank as well, although I haven't gone to school in almost 2 years and they've let me keep my student checking account, ha. Free checking FTW.

So wait, you operate vending machines? Some dude left a VendStar 6000 in my shop and never came for it. It's sitting in the back. That's not yours, is it? Good luck with the silver and whatnot, I've personally seen maybe 20 silver quarters in my roll-searching time that were found in circulation. They're tough to find.

Oh, by the way, some TD bank machines reject silver... they're much older penny arcades, and you'll only find them in ones that used to be Commerce branches. Always check the reject slot, and don't be afraid to stick your fingers up the tube, usually a few coins will get stuck in there and only come out when they're either hit by another coin or pulled out by you.

    Weather is crazy today!
