Polish Coins Honor Colonial American Settlement Way back in 1608 a group of about eight Polish craftsmen and artisans were part of the second party of European settlers to join the Jamestown settlement in Virginia. Their arrival occurred just two years after the founding of Jamestown as the first permanent English settlement in North America. Included in the party were glass makers who built North America's first glass smelting furnace, allowing for the production of jars and windowpanes. To mark the 400th anniversary of these early settlers, Poland issued a "Nordic Gold" (A brass alloy) 2 Zlote plus a silver and glass 10 Zlotych. The 10 Zlotych has a glass center picturing a glass blower surrounded by a silver ring. Various images of the settlers and their craft are pictured on the silver ring. The silver ring has an antiqued finish. 2008 Brass 2 Zlote - World Coin Gallery photo: http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/coine_wd.php?dir=img17&image=143-2z08l&desc=Polandy6592Zlote(2008)PolishSettlementinNorthAmerica&query=Polandsettlement 2008 Glass Center/Silver Ring (Antique Finish) 10 Zlotych - Joel's Coins photo: http://www.joelscoins.com/images/poland10zamerbr.jpg Hope you enjoyed Poland's celebration coins honoring Jamestown. Very nice coins indeed. I have the 2 zł piece only (which was issued at face); the other two in that series were the 10 zł silver/glass coin and a 100 zł gold piece. Here is an English language folder (PDF) with more info about the issues: http://www.nbp.pl/en/banknoty/kolekcjonerskie/2008/400_osadnictwo_en.pdf The central bank also has some large (as in BIG ) images of the coins.
