I have come across a 1964 nickel and it doesnt seem to have a proof mark anywhere on the coin, is this something i should take notice to or did they not have a proof mark for that year? Any help would be appreciated, im really new to this coin collecting. Thanks
It did, just not for Philly, Denver has a "D'' MM, and San-Fran had a "S" MM. look to the right of Monticello, htat is where one of these will be.
Yep, a regular Philadelphia nickel, also one of the highest mintages so not uncommon at all. But keep your eye out for other older coins. Besides nickels and pennies, all pre 1965 coinage is silver, dimes, quarters, halves, dollars...
Yes i am. I have been interested in coins for quite some time now and now that i have free time i would like to get more in to the collecting part. I have a very large amount of coins and am looking to find out which ones i should keep an eye out for. Also, was it just pre 1965 or does it include 1965 for the silver?
1964 and any previous years for the silver, I'd love to hear about any of the coins you have, and could help you to decide if they are collectable
Okay thank you. I have 3 coins that im not sure about. One is a 1979 SBA dollar, the other two are presidential dollars. One is the George Washington one and it is the silver dollar and the other is Thomas Jefferson and it is a golden dollar. Anything special about them?
Not really, but many great collections start with small items such as these. I began my entire silver collection with a 1959 dime, it's nothing great compared to others on this forum but given I'm only thirteen and in only 1 year have acquired a nice enough collection. With a little bit of money saved ( I have a very limited budget) and maybe some roll-searching you can get some nice collectable coins. Given the unstable silver market right now, I would be putting my focuses into type coins and copper. Some nice coins that you can get right now are Large-Cents and Wheat-Cents, I would suggest maybe putting a Whitman folder of Wheat cents together and see how you like it. Keep in mind a collection will not come over night but will cost time and money. I also suggest that you purchase a copy of the 2012 Red Book- http://www.amazon.com/Guide-United-States-Coins-Spiral/dp/0794833500 Good luck!!!
You are very much correct, that completely skipped my mind, is the nickel reflective? Does it have incredible detail when compared with a business-strike? If so it may be a proof....
Its about as reflective as any other Nickel. It has definatley seen better days so i cant really tell if at one point it had more detail or not but i do notice that it is a bit thicker compared to a 1985 Nickel and i bit thicker than a 1948 Nickel as well
Well, it's probably not a proof then...it sounds like it has been well circulated. I just saw that work in your first post and the thought crossed my mind.
Ok, well than it is not a proof. The thickness varies on all coins, the mint is'nt perfect, far from it, good luck, and if you need anymore information, I'm sure anyone here would be more than happy to help. BTW: Welcome to CoinTalk!!!
