That is simply a GREAT find!!! Full dates on errors make them SOOO much more desirable, not to mention, valuable. Look at that 'Pass and Stow'....that is almost totally full, which you don't see often. That would have bee a very fully struck coin...but then again, on a thinner planchet, it might just be 'one of those things'. Regardless, great find....enjoy reaping the profit!!!!
Absolutely! I was scrolling through the thread to see if someone else had mentioned it before I chimed in. Congratulations on a sweet, sweet coin!
Wow.. Thank you for posting pictures. I have never really been an error person (lol sounds funny because I really have never been a coin person too.. up untill now that is). What a great find?? Did you find this or buy it? I bet it is even better in person. Most errors that I see are on ebay and really have no WOW factor to me. But your quarter and and the OP's dime have me thinking. Thank you again for sharing!
So how does the $$$ get split up once it is sold? Does the owner of the shop get the $$$, or do you get it, or do you split it? Evenly, or more to you for being the man with the vision?
Like a dealer I met once would have said "I got several of those in back, but I can give you $50 cash for it". LOL GREAT FIND !!!!!
Thanks for all your input people! It has been a lot of fun and it keeps getting better. The forum has helped us learn some things and we decided to have Stacks Bowers Galleries auction it at the ANA Chicago show auction in August. They are excited to sell the coin for us and they also had no idea what it will bring, but they thought it would be good. Yes, the coin proceeds get split three ways. One third goes to the shop owner, one to the coin owner, and one third to me for finding it. Thats how tight our group is and feels the best and carries over into all our dealings. None of us are error guys and we all are into other types of coin interests, so any proceeds will go towards those endeavors I'm sure. Until then, keep an eye out for the auction results! Maybe a forum member will become the new owner!
I bought it many years ago. I'm sort of a numbers geek, so I remember for how much, but not from whom or when. I thought it was a good deal then, and I think the same now. One of the things I like best is that it circulated. The transcendental connection a thing can be to the people it affected in the past is something I greatly enjoy. I can imagine disputes over whether to consider it a quarter or a half; it's a satisfying experience that we who are collectors of such items uniquely share.
Awesome! Great that you guys are not getting lawyers involved like a lot of people would do... but I bet there are lawyers who heard of this and are clamoring to get a piece for themselves! Damn ambulance chasers!!! (laughs) Good luck with your auction guys!
So it has been several months since this coin was discovered and this thread was started, so please read the discovery story at the beginning of the post. This coin was placed at auction in the stacks Bowers August ANA show this summer, and although it was a little under the estimates as to what it would bring, it hammered at 5750.00. The three of us owners where pretty pleased with that and we feel justified selling it as none of us new how to buy each other out so we just put it up to the highest bidder. Because it took several months to have it conserved, graded, consigned, auctioned and then wait 6 weeks for payment, it is nice to be through the process. I will take pride watching this coin go from owner to owner knowing I discovered it. As time goes on I will show the pictures of what it looked like slathered in PCB before we sent it to NCS. The coin below is what I invested my portion of the funds into.
I felt that the values of this common date Saint was pretty known and more liquid that an unknown Franklin error and it took 6 months to realize any profit from it. Plus the booming mint luster on this coin is spectacular at arms length and I think NGC was pretty tough on it, but there is a small scuff at 3 o'clock (what scuff?, with that eye appeal). This will always represent the coin that friendship and being astute brought home for me. So what say you guys? How did I do? Regards, Matt
lol I'd say you did Great Matt!! And that's a great way to split it up between you all. What did the others do with their share? More Dbl eagles?
Thanks Duke! I don't know what they are doing, I have to cash the check Tuesday and give them their piece then, I saw this coin when it came through the shop and put it on hold when it came back from NGC. I though, why buy something from some random dealer and send the prosperity their way when it should stay right in the shop that spawned the deal in the first place. I'm still pretty pumped, Matt
Great story on the discovery of that error and a great error coin in its own right.. but I have to say, what you purchased with your share is absolutly dripping with luster and the scuff at 3? It doesn't detract from what is a true beauty~~ Congrats on both....
