Hey guys, today might have been the first day I've ever found silver roll searching, but I need your guys knowledge. Yes I used Google I just want to double-check with everyone here because people on this site know their stuff.

So anyway I was roll searching today and had $14 to buy rolls so I bought a roll of Quarters and two rolls of Nickels. I searched through the quarters and nothing except a bicentennial which I like to keep. Then I got to the Nickels and a few coins in I find a 1941. That piqued my interest. I kept going and found a few 1950's and three 1961's all together in both rolls.

What years are nickels made of silver? If the ones I have have silver in them then today is awesome since its the first time I ever bought nickel rolls.

The only time nickels ever had silver in them was from 1942-1945. They contain 35% silver. Keep in mind though that 1942-D do not contain any silver.

The easiest way to tell the silver nickels (if your not always sure on the dates) are from the huge mintmark above monticello.

ahh ok. I think Ill buy a folder for nickels and use them to fill it up since I dont find 1960's very often. Then again I usually just go through change for nickels.

Putting together a date set of nickels from roll search can be VERY fun as you still can find some really old nickels in bank rolls. And yes, look for the HUGE mint mark above Monticello on the reverse from 42-45 to indicate that it is 35% silver. Good luck!!

Agreed. Jefferson are a great series to collect.

and its cheaper than buying a roll of quarters or dollars lol. One roll of dollars for $25 or 12 rolls of nickels for $24?
And to think I thought I was just going to try and collect quarters when I first began. Now I'm collecting nickels, quarters, halves, and the native American/presidential dollars. Dimes and cents, here I come lmao.

You sound just like me 18 months ago! Next thing you know, you will have 20 new Dansco albums :)

I got lucky though, silver was around $12. So I was able to aquire the pre '64's at a decent price. Theres no way I could afford it now.

I'm barely able to afford anything right now because I don't have any money. I recently got a job but haven't started yet. I start next week. The money I have I use to buy rolls and will pick a few out of each roll and then cash the rest back in lol.

Dimes, quarters, and half dollars had net 90% silver content through 1964. But not nickels, except for the noted 1942-45 coins with huge mintmark on the back (and a distinctive blue-green hue when in circulation long). The Kennedy halves dated 1965-70 have net 40% silver content, while the smaller circulating coins had no silver after 1964.

Thats a great way to do it. Paying face value can't be beat! I run a racket with everyone I know. I tell them I will change in all of their change jars. Its free at my bank. That gives me the opportunity to look through their change. Yesterday I found 2 silver dimes in $538 in change lol.

edit: dang I said 'change' a lot in that post!

My pleasure! Good luck in your searching. I am lucky to be old enough to remember when you could still find Franklin halves, Walking Libertys, and the occasional Barber half in circulation. In fact I just bought a large collection where the fellow had put most of it away in the 1940s-50s when he worked as a kid at his dad's general store. The oldest silver coins in it were two Bust halves--1821 and 1834--and an 1853 Arrows and Rays quarter. Neat stuff!

Besides state quarters, that was the first complete set that I ever finished. :)

hey just a question to anyone who can answer it: What year did the Native American dollar coin reverse start changing yearly? Wasnt it 2009 the first year it had a different reverse? I know it has nothing to do with nickels but its better than starting another thread. :D

I almost finished a Jefferson Set from '38-date from roll searching. I ended up buying the 1939-D, 1950-D and three of the war nickels. Now the only hole I have is the 2009-P.
