Up untill now I have been leaving it as soon as payment is recieved . That may soon change if buyers dont start reciprocating.

I think you would be making a mistake then. Leave feedback when payment is received and the majority of the time you will get a good result. I think it's better to do that then upset a customer. If you don't get feedback from someone, just let it go and I think you are better off.

When someone sends me an email asking for feedback, it sort of annoys me. I usually do all my feedback at the same time, not when I get the item. I've never sent someone an email requesting feedback. If they don't give me feedback, then that's fine. I won't lose any sleep over it.

As an ebay buyer, I leave feedback once I receive the item in the mail and it is as described.

I don't leave Feedback since I find it almost impossible to do. I don't know what to click. The site is unfriendly in this regard. I go around in circles and never find it, so now I don't even try.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. If you, as a seller, leave (positive) feedback upon receipt of payment, the entire remainder of the transaction is vulnerable to problems. I've only sold a few items on ebay; the last item I sold was a nice camera lens. If I had left feedback as soon as payment was received, the buyer—worst case scenario—could have cried SNAD, sent me back a potato and demanded his money back. I'd have little recourse. Granted, this is unlikely but it makes the point, just as Conder's other scenarios do. Why not simply wait until the entire transaction is complete? Whom would this hurt?

When I do sell again, I intend to explain in the listing that I will happily leave positive feedback as soon as 1), buyer leaves me positive feedback upon receipt of the item or 2), the return period has expired. I don't see how any legitimate buyer could have a problem with this. Not that it would prevent all problems but I'd feel a little more covered.

One easy way is to click on your feedback number. Once that screen loads, at the bottom it will say "Leave feedback." Click on it and then it will show you what auctions you need to leave feedback for.

If a seller can't be bothered to leave feedback, I assume it's not important to them.

Some of them hold back feedback until they see if the buyer is going to say anything negative. That's pretty weak, particularly if the buyer has no negative feedback.

If you are a seller and you did right by the customer and you left feedback, then send a brief note thanking them for the business, ask if everything was satisfactory, and mention the importance of feedback. If they don't respond, there's nothing else you can do.

If you buy from a physical store, then you know up front what you're getting and your payment for the item indicates that you're satisfied (positive feedback.)

If you buy on line, you don't know you're satisfied until the item arrives. If you're satisfied you should leave positive feedback.

As an on-line seller, after a purchase is made and shipped, it's senseless to leave feedback until after the buyer has indicated his satisfaction with Feedback.

How would you feel if you sold something and left glowing feedback to the buyer as soon as the payment was made, and then the buyer flamed you for some reason?

In my seller's opinion, the transaction is not complete until the buyer has indicated his satisfaction by leaving positive feedback. At that point I reciprocate with appropriate feedback for him.

IMHO, this statement is completely wrong. A buyer has upheld their part of the agreement once payment is received. If they have done their part satisfactorily then they deserve positive feedback for it...when they do it. It doesn't matter what their feedback for the seller is...if they leave a complaint because in their eyes the seller didn't uphold his side of the agreement; it doesn't change the fact that the buyer. In my eyes, withholding feedback until the buyer has posted feedback is akin to a bully using a threat to get his way.

I handle feedback in this exact same manner. If I am dissatisfied, I just don;t leave a feedback at all. But I try to be sure there is never a reason to leave a negative feedback for me. Enough people do leave feedback that your number will grow. Just go forward, doing the best you can.

    I agree.

If the buyer has 100% positive feedback then the seller should have nothing to fear. They are holding back either because they couldn't be bothered with the customer once they got payment or because they want the opportunity to leave negative feedback as retribution.

Of the dealers who do not leave feedback after payment, not one has ever contacted me to see if I were satisfied with the purchase.

I don't trust dealers who play that game.

I have left negative feedback in the past, but very rarely. If I am dissatisfied with something, I will wait to leave feedback and contact the other party explaining what is wrong. For example, I bought something a while back for about $8 plus $1.50 shipping...there were a couple identical items on there for the same price but higher shipping. This one was the least expensive so I bought it. It arrived as described but with $1 postage due...this frustrated me because the shipping cost was the exact reason I went with this seller. I contacted the seller prior to leaving feedback. He responded saying that he had never had that happen before, he apologized, and refunded my $1 to my paypal account. He had a very good feedback history so I figured it was some minor mistake. Once it was resolved, I promptly left positive feedback.

A lot of people would have just left a negative. I prefer to try and work it out. In this case, it wasn't really about the money. I just wanted an explanation and an apology. But, I was happy to get the refund too.

I don't know how you can conclude this. Payment is only the first step. Implicit in the buyer's agreement is that he/she be satisfied with the merchandise. Isn't the actual item the most important part of any transaction?

I understand your point that if the seller is thorough and conscientious, there should be no further problem upon receipt of payment and therefore feedback could be left at that time. But what if there is a disagreement of some kind? What if the buyer intends to cause trouble? What's the harm in waiting until the entire transaction is complete?

It boggles my mind that you would consider this as a "bully using a threat." That sounds so harsh. I consider waiting for a transaction to be complete as being thorough, patient and professional.

I should add that the ebay norm these days (unfortunately, IMO) seems to be that sellers give positive feedback upon receipt of payment. Therefore a seller who intends to wait until the transaction is complete should explain his policy in the listing to avoid arousing suspicion of any kind.

Yeah, but the dealers who do not leave feedback upon payment never leave it. It's not like they are waiting for delivery confirmation.

I basically agree with the above, except, as a seller, I don't necessarily wait for the buyer to leave feedback to leave my own. I do, however, wait a reasonable time after the item was received by the buyer before I leave feedback. I generally wait a day or two to be sure there are no unresolved issues, becuase I believe that is part of the transaction as a whole. Certainly I do my best as a seller but "stuff" happens from time to time. This strategy won't help with all situations but has worked well for me as long as I can remember. Plus, once a buyer sees their feedback number grow, they may check it and be more likely to reciprocate if they have already received the item.

The item is the most important part. However, once the buyer has paid for it...they have done their part. They should be given feedback accordingly. It is the sole responsibility of the seller to ensure that the buyer receives the merchandise and is satisfied with it...the feedback the buyer receives has nothing to do with that.

Sellers on ebay run the gamut. Some are high-volume dealers who are too busy to be bothered with feedback. Others are simply lazy or unprofessional in other ways. I don't shop on ebay so I don't have to put up with it.

I've only sold a few things on ebay; nothing for less than $100. I bend over backwards to provide a thorough and accurate listing and otherwise please the buyer. Since I don't work in volume and only sell a few large items, I try to protect myself against foul intentions. I think waiting for the transaction to be complete can help this—although there is no complete safeguard.

I agree with you 100%—unless the buyer has bad intentions. E.g., the buyer may have gotten caught up in a (drunk) bidding war, paid that evening, regretted his purchase in the morning and now looks for a way out of the sale. He can fabricate a complaint about the item, claim he never received it, etc. I think waiting for the entire transaction to be over lessens the chances of this sort of thing.

However, I admit that, if the buyer truly has bad intentions, he's going to get his way on ebay regardless of how professional the seller is.
