Who Knows About Your Hobby?

How many people do you tell about your coin collecting hobby? Most of my family members know I collect, but I only have a few close friends who know I am a coin collector. I have always been discreet about my collecting because I didn't want the wrong type of person to find out about my collection.
I am asking because one of the people I work with recently came across several hundred silver halves while rehabbing a home he bought. They were all Walkers and Barbers. He sold the silver to a local dealer for a little less than spot value. If he had known I was a collector at that time he said I could have had first shot at purchasing the coins.
I would hate to miss out on another situation like this. Should I let a few more people know about my hobby?

Just about all of my friends do, even to a point where I've gotten at least 5 to collect as well.

Outside of the forums that I post on, Only my parents know that I collect silver art bars. Nobody in my city knows that I collect silver art bars and I do not plan to tell anybody else because I am not comfortable telling other people such as friends and coworkers that I collect.

My family and my closest friends know. That's it. I just don't talk about it much to others. I don't think its anybody else's business.

Family and a couple of friends. My Co-Workers know I collect coins, which has given me leads, but they do not have any idea to what extent my collection is, or values etc. Just basically, " Hey Don likes coins, lets show him this! " I had one co-worker tell me to hurry to a Dunken Donuts after work one day because he knew the cashier there and they called him to let him know there is 18 dollars face in old halves. I went, scooped them up and split them with the tipper.

He bought a couple 90% Kennedy's out of his drawer one day, and left a 40%. I asked him why he didn't want it as well it is still silver, he just claimed he didn't, so I bought it from his drawer. He actually received a Brit 6 Pence from like 1811 once as a dime. He bought that out of his drawer. It was barely AG, but still we got a heck of a laugh out of the fact that it was filling a place in circulation as a dime.

Only immediate family, CT, one lawyer and insurance company. Unfortunately, probably the mailman as well but not by design. I leave nothing laying around the house for workmen or unplanned visitors to see and question. Anything of value is kept off site.

Just a few family members, a few close friends, and a few co-workers who also collect. Mainly the group who knows is small for me, because it seems most everyone else could care less. I don't worry about who knows, because in reality, most people associate collecting coins with people who fill five gallon water bottles with pocket change. They don't associate it with million dollar plus coins, rarities, or bullion, and remain ignorant of most other aspects of the hobby.

My parents and brother know. A few of my co-workers know, but they don't know where I live (I work outside the county I live in). Most of the time when I talk to people about coins/PMs, I don't really disclose what I have, but rather give out information that could help that particular person (like why they should invest in some PMs, what kind of coinage to look for in circulation, etc...).

Save for the turds who sit outside of coinshows and watch for unsuspecting dealers and unwary collectors (maybe that should be worded the other way around :)). Be ever diligent in your observance gentleman. People do watch you......

Pretty much everyone I know knows I collect coins but they dont know the extent of what I collect or my collection. They think I collect cents, nickels, dimes and quarters since thats what I am always asking them for. Dang those 2009-P&D nickels and dimes are hard to find!
