Well than I guess your just going to have to be satisfied not knowing for certain what exactly you bought and the clock will run out on any return policy. I'd really hate to believe any dealer would tell you something is worth .50 , when you believe it is pure silver. Good luck.

Thank you! I agree and the fact that they said they had sold one the other day.. more lies. A member on here thinks he might know someone with a book that might have the metal in it. I am going to wait to hear back from him and go from there. He has a few of these types of metals and truly believes it to be silver.. I am hoping he is right because I really like the metal, just dont want to be over charged. Thanks again and best wishes!

I don't know what else it could possibly be. Either it's Sterling Silver , Silver or the Bi-metallic composition that was made for the First Day Covers. Thats it, no big mystery there. Strange that dealer told you it's only worth .50 . I had asked you before to provide a link to the auction you purchased the medal. Can you provide that ?

Shawni, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I probably won't be around in 20 years. I'll be 64 in a few months, and I've been smoking for 50+ years.

That's odd! You don't sound like a true blonde.

I didn't realize that you live here in Florida. I'm in Cape Coral. One thing you MUST do, is attend the FUN Show next January in Orlando. It is one of the biggest and oldest coin shows in the country, and there will be 800-1000 dealers attending. There is always something for every budget, and you really don't want to miss it. Admission is free, but you do have to pay for parking at the Orange County Convention Center.

Don't worry! Your medal is silver, and it doesn't really matter if it is .90 or .925 fine. Big deal! It is not like the First Day Covers that were mentioned. These were produced in accordance with Public Law 93-179 which has nothing to do with First Day Covers.

Also, out of curiosity, I removed one from the disk and weighed it. It is 1.072 oz. So, yeah, you got a good deal.

Thanks for the link. As I stated in an earlier post, if yours is Sterling Silver, it's value is approx. $37.00. Of course if it's .999 than it's value is Silver Melt + depending upon which dealer you work with. When did you bring this medal to Dales Coins for an appraisal and with whom did you speak ?

I went there this morning around 10:30am.. Dale himself looked at it and said he didnt believe it was silver because the leaflet didn't state it. A lady who had blonde hair I've never gotten her name.. is the one who was sure it was not silver and is the one that statedthey had just sold one for .50 not that long ago, as she pointed to a wall behind me where you can help yourself type shelfs are. I am thinking next time I go in I should see if they have any that I can buy for under a dollar.

Yes I know. I spoke with Dales Coins and she said you were in and recalled the medal you presented to them. They stand by their appraisal, " There is no Precious Metal " content in the piece you presented. Now Chris cannot say with absolute 100% certainty that your medal is either Sterling or pure Silver and to suggest it is ,in light of the fact that a " COIN DEALER " appraised this medal for you and found it to be of no P.M. content and he has not physically seen this medal , suggesting the dealer is less than reputable without first hand experience is nothing short of meritless comments. The woman at Dales coins suggested you may want to stop by again and they will take another look at it for you. Who you going to trust ? Those that haven't physically seen your medal or a professional dealer who has and is in the business of developing trade, not misleading potential customers or cheating them. I suggest you do just that rather timely, as you only have a certain time limit on EBAY to return the item. If you must absolutely have an authentic example of this commemorative, let me know , I will locate one for you. I buy and sell coins and medals all week long. I can certainly can locate an authentic issue for you. Good Luck.

Thank you all for the help on this one! I was finally able to verify that it is a 1oz silver after all, thanks to a new found friend on this great site. He was able to contact a person of resourses on this one. Again thank you all for hanging in there.

Bull dinky . There is no way they can say with absolute certainty you piece is either Sterling or Pure Silver , without an in-hand appraisal. How did he do this, with a book ? Believe who you wish, that guy behind the keyboard, or your local dealer who is in business to develop their trade and provide accurate and fair appraisals. There were billions of these commemorative medals produced, by a variety of makers and of many different compositions, including those that have zero P.M. content . I sincerely hope, that your piece is at least a Sterling Silver Composition, but to say it is with absolute 100% certainty it is, from only a keyboard view, or a book is a meritless statement. Especially in light of the fact that a Professional Dealer informed you otherwise. Perhaps this was reason for your questioning the piece to begin with. Good luck to you Shawni . Oh BTW, there is only one sure way to test for Silver, and that is an " Acid " test.

Yes. There is a book I that cost way more then I can afford. We were able to find someone who owned it. If you would like I will get the name of the book and attach it. The reason I doubt Dale's is for other reasons. I have several silver rounds that I won on trips to Vegas. I know that most are silver and brass. If the brass ring is on the outside and the silver on the inside $10 tokens. I have some that are $25-$50 with the metals being reversed. I took them in a while back and they said that they would take them in the back and pound them out to get the silver, that is if I were selling them to them (which I wasn't). After looking them up and a little more research I was right they are worth way more then a pounding and melt. I am concerned on going back there because of you calling them. I hate confrontations and am not sure that they will have a few extra words for me. So if I choose to go back it will take sometime for sure. I am not sure why you had called them? If it was because you thought I was making this up or to see if maybe I miss understood. The fact of the matter is.. this is really the closest shop to me. I do want you to know that I really am greatful for everyones imput. In the end if I am wrong I will gladly say. But I went with my gut and stood it out till I could take all factors into count. Addition to the book. I was alos able to validate it with someone who owns several of these. All in all I learned a valuable leason with this medal.. Not to buy something unless you are 100% sure what you are buying. Thanks again! I am sure I will be out to rack everyones brains again with some crazy coin/medal, that I thought was a great deal. Best wishes,
    Shawni

Here is a post, where Chris made another mistake about these issues. It seems this was a major one for him: Read the entire thread. http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=4778539&gonew=1#UNREAD Read all the posts by cpm9ball. It appears his thinking he had Gold, well they are actually gold plated and worth retail roughly $5.00 ea.

That link lists modern commem's. I can't find anything on the bicentennial medals there. When I click on "medals" it only shows what's being currently offered by the mint.

Right, but the OP shows a bicentennial medal, not a commem.
