I started collecting the state quarter sets years ago in 2004. That year I bought the proof 90% Silver set and bought one each year after. I got a 1999 silver clad set and a 2000 90% silver set from somewhere along the way, don't remember at this point but I'm missing 2001, 2002, 2003. I was wondering, since these are 90% Silver, does the price of silver effect the price of these sets? I've been looking on ebay and they linger around $50 +/- a few dollars. I don't follow the trend of silver prices and no nothing about them, but would these ever increase or decrease dramatically in the next few years? Any chance they would decrease if the price of silver dropped or should I jump on them now? What would be fair deal on each set? Thanks

They're worth melt, really. Should be worth melt for the forseeable future. The 1999 is the exception, IIRC.

They may be worth only melt, but you will be hard pressed to purchase the 2002 or 2003 for less than $50+ which is the current bid/ask prices as reported by CDN

    Thanks, that's an awesome site.

I was looking at a chart on the price of silver and it said that on May 1, 2010 it was at about $18 and today it is going for $48 (I'm guessing this is for 1oz, it didn't say). So if I had bought these sets a year ago I would have got them for $20 or so? Will silver keep increasing at this rate do you think? I might be completely misunderstanding the chart, but that seems like a dramatic increase in the last year. Heres the link to the chart: http://www.monex.com/prods/silver_chart.html

I found a coin shop close to my area and finally visited it today. They had them for $45 each, so I finally got all 50. Well except 1999, mine are only silver clad, but I will eventually get the 90% silver ones. Now all I need is the 6 territories then I'll start collecting the National Parks.

I guess you caught that dealer on a real good day. Congrats $45.00 is a very good buy.

I know, he had pretty good prices on all in IHC too, which I also collect. I'm definitely going back to him when I get more money. The quarters he sold me didn't have the box or COA, but they were still in their original US mint cases. I might go tomorrow and see if he has the 1999s, I didn't think to ask when I was there earlier. I also just bought the 6 territories on eBay for $49.99 plus $2.99 shipping, so $53 isn't bad for all 6 territories, again there is not COA or box, but I can't keep up with those anyway...

Maybe I misunderstood, but I don't think they made silver clad sets. Just 90% silver and regular clad sets with no silver. At least, that's all I've heard of.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think you are right. They do only make 90% silver or ones clad with cupronickel with a copper core. Hmm, all this time I thought they were silver clad, guess not. I'm glad you mentioned that. Either way I still want the 90%s but they go for like $160 or so I think.

The silver proof sets are selling near $60/each now on ebay. The quarter sets are selling for nearly $50/each by themselves. It is getting crazy on the bay!

Oh, NO COA or box. That's a big issue when it comes time to sell. I would refrain from spending that amount of money for items that don't have all the original mint packaging if you at some point want to re-sell them as such.

Why? I seen plenty on eBay without the box or COA that sold just fine. You might get a few more dollars for including the box and COA, but from what I've seen plenty sell without them for not much less. I suppose there is a concern that you would get a clad set in the red silver mint case; but one, you can tell the difference between clad and silver. Washington is always looks a frostier white on the silver ones than he does on the clad ones. If you were really worried about getting cheated because somebody put clad quarters in a silver mint case then you should be just as worried they put the clad quarters in real box with a real COA (or even a fake reprinted box and COA).

I know I gonna get flack for this but I take them out of the mint cases anyway. Even though you can tell the differnece between clad and silver I also double check the edge to make sure there is no copper. I also prefer to store silver in intercept sheilds because unlike a lot of people, I don't like toning on my silver. I appreciate the natural toning process and will leave it on an old coin if it has natural toning, but when I buy new silver I want to avoid as much toning as possible. I keep the mint cases in the event I would resale them, which is extremely unlikely to happen in my lifetime anyway, but you can take the mint cases apart and remove the quarters without causing any damage to either if you're careful. As I said above I'll probably catch some flack for taking them out of the cases and for not wanting them to tone, but they are my coins that I paid my money for and I never plan to sell them so I will do as I please with them thank you very much :p

No problem with taking them out. Just makes MY sets more valuable! :)

Yeah if want to sell them for 45.00............ I'm speaking of the 90% silver sets.

At one time I felt it was a sacrilige to take the proofs from their original holders, but I don't feel that way any more. I've busted into a few sets. :)

In your case Clay, you're wise to break them out and check the edges.....and yes, silver does have a different look compared to cupronickel.

Yeah, see I'm really doing you all a favor.

But that is for today's prices. I never plan to sell them, and would only do so if I was desperate for money which will hopfully never be the case. Even if I did sell them one day, 15 years from now they are still going to be worth a lot more than I paid for them today regardless of what kind of case they are in. I don't care what the market value of a coin is quite frankly. Each state quarter is a small relief sculpture made in silver. I look at each quarter more like that than I do as an investment (which is also is). I like to pick the 2x2 shield up one at a time, examine the sculpture with a loupe, put it back and look at the next one. That's what provides me with the most enjoyment. I don't mind being comforted by the idea that silver will surely continue to increase in price and my coins will gain monetary value, but you guys need to remember what coin collecting is all about...enjoying your coins to the maximum extent. I guess if investing rather than collecting is your thing, then that's fine. Or if you prefer to observe your coins in their mint case, well that's fine to. I'm just enjoying my coins the best way for me personally.

Well I guess if I wanted to sell them for more I could just buy the boxes and COA for each set. Here's an entire set of just the boxes and COAs for $19.99 BIN. Why somebody would just sell the boxes and COAs is odd though, I guess they never plan on reselling their sets so figure might as well sell the boxes and COAs

I always thought that the boxes and COA's being sold where from sets that got sent in for grading?
