Ok so I was at the pawn shop today and saw a walking liberty half dollar. The picture below is not the coin I saw but its almost exactly like it just maybe not as shiny, just not the same year. Anyway would you say its worth $17?

They aren't ripping you off, but it's not a steal. Melt value at the moment is right around $16.50.

I'll take a nice circulated Walker over most other "junk silver", but I'm mostly trying to find them below melt.

It depends on what year it is.

What's the year (date) of the coin you saw? And does it have a mint mark (small letter D or S) under "In God We Trust" or at around 7:00 on the reverse (tails side)?

well it sounds good to me then, Im just looking for a nice walker to put in my collection seeing as Im just starting out. Plus its a pawn shop, maybe they are willing to go down a dollar or two.

I think the year was 1932, and I dont remember the mint mark/if it had one.

Im not really in it for the silver content, I just want one in my collection

Can't be a 1932.....none were made that year.

As of right now with silver up, Yes its worth $17 now if silver stays up your fine. Though if silver drops you will lose value. I would get a nice uncirculated example for a bit more and it will hold its value more.

I agree, for a common date circulated walker...approximately melt is a fair price. I think the coin is priced fine for now...but if silver moves (which is has been lately), it might not be. This coin will only ever be worth melt value.

If you can get it for only fifty cents over melt, it's worth it in my opinion.

With the silver market's instability these days, fifty cents over melt today might not be such a good buy tomorrow. :p

That's a good point. At today's levels, a dateless Walker goes for $16-$17; so does a VF-XF example. You can get a nice AU for $20 or less, and an uncirculated specimen for maybe $30. The slick will never be worth more than melt, but the higher-grade examples are unlikely to drop as much.

On the other hand, if silver goes to $100, they'll all get the same price.

Why not buy the coin at the pawn shop, take some pics of it and post them here then ask us if it's worth the $17 you paid for it ;)

I dont have a job and rely on my parents for allowance each week. I currently have $57 to my name. I would like to buy it.

They also had a walker for $80 and it was EXTREMELY shiny, so Im guessing it was a proof. I would love to buy that one to, but the price is WAYYY out of my league.

I don't know what proof walkers usually run, but I'd guess they're more than that. Might just be a heavily polished coin, or uncirculated specimen.

If you just want one for your collection, at today's high silver price I would want a better grade one for just slightly more. You can get a pretty XF walker for not much more nowadays.

There are hundreds of millions of these coins around. If you just want a type, I would look around more and be picky.

It could have been a uncirculated coin. I mean that coin was perfect.

ya, but I cant be too picky with a $50 limit lol
