In an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies, Mr. Drysdale tries to get Jed Clampett interested in coin collecting. He shows Jed an 1894-S Barber dime mounted in a Whitman folder. Mr. Drysdale said the coin was worth more than $10,000. Jed couldn't believe that a dime could be worth so much. As it turned out, in real life, Jed (Buddy Ebsen) was a coin collector and actually owned an 1894-S dime.
In the 1983 music video "Billy Jean" by Michael Jackson, the character flips a Kennedy half dollar into a wino's cup transforming him into a well dressed socialite. Since this vid was made in 1983 the Kennedy could be dated 1964 thru 1983
In the movie ghost, I recall that Patrick Swayze found an indian head cent while renovating Demi Moore's condo. At the time, he thinks it's lucky but it didn't seem to end up that way.
Somebody posted a thread on here one time about a web site he created that shows movies and references to coins. I am to lazy to find it right now.
There was a coin collecting Goof on the "Dick Van Dyke" show aired in 1965. (get a load of how beautiful Mary Tyler Moore was back then!) The writers of this episode took some license in suggesting the coin rarity that the characters look for among the old coins Rob discovers in an old oil lamp. Mr. Harlow, the numismatist, tells them that a "matching pair" of buffalo nickels, one with the buffalo on the mound and one on the plain, would be worth "thousands of dollars". The characters then sort through the coins but are unable to find a buffalo nickel with the buffalo on the plain. In fact, except for the first year that buffalo nickels were issued (1913), all such nickels had the buffalo on the plain. The nickels with the buffalo on the mound that the characters are apparently able to find with ease are actually the rarer of the two varieties issued in 1913. Despite this, a pair of such 1913 buffalo nickels (especially in 1965 when this episode was made) would not have been particularly valuable - or at least not nearly as valuable as suggested in this episode.
The movie Sahara features a confederate united states gold hoard, which actually makes for a pretty interesting plot in my opinion! Dirk Pitt actually uses a gold coin as a (shudders) screwdriver to aid in a daring escape from the bad guys. Movie is based on a Clive Cussler novel. My wife got me into Dirk Pitt, he is a much more compelling hero than James Bond in my opinion. More like Indiana Jones I guess, but he's an ex navy seal who gets into more trouble than reasonably expected. Good stuff.
I posted a writeup on CoinTalk separately of my favorite coin-related television episode, the 1996 "Law & Order" episode entitled "Survivor" which starred Karen Allen in a story about coin collectors and others hunting for some very rare ancient coins. Posted in the CoinTalk Coin Chat section: http://www.cointalk.com/showthread.php?t=170879&p=1163966
An old thread of mine from 2009, not sure if all the links work anymore: TV commercials that feature coins
He's talking about the movie... watch the first few minutes on YouTube and you'll see some coins and some old PCGS slabs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k4mmq57sjE
Don't you mean post #20? That would put you, uh... let's see... right after... Well huh, right after me! (OK, so I thought it was a movie, but still)
There's a movie called "Hear No Evil" starring Marlee Matlin and Martin Sheen that the synopsis of the movie is about a rare coin being recovered. It's an ok flick but it's cool because of the coin. I don't remember if it was a real or made up rare coin though.
On an episode of the kids' show Wild & Crazy Kids in 1990, one of the hosts flipped a two-headed Kennedy Half to cheat at a coin toss to decide which one of the three hosts would oversee a particular stunt during that episode.
