Welcome to CT! It is very hard to give this one a value/grade because of the pictures you posted. The glare is way to much to be able to see details. The rest of it looks polished to me, but again, that is probably the pictures. Can you get some better shots without a flash?
I tend to agree. I am hoping it is only cleaned and not polished to death. There is still some good value to this one because of the key date. It appears to have xf detail.
Much better. My grade guess would be XF-45. It doesnt appear to be polished. I won't comment on if it was cleaned or not. Most will probably say it was, based on the scratch patterns (on the reverse). So if it wasn't cleaned, I would estimate it between $300-$350. Interested to hear what everyone else has to say. PS: Now you are going to get yelled at for holding it in your hand!
I'm no expert so I don't how to be sure it was cleaned. If I were to guess, I would guess that it has, like you said because of the light horizontal scratch on the reverse
I'm no expert on cleaned coins, but those scratches are suspect. It could also be that someone decided to rub some sand paper on it. A lot of things can happen to a coin that's been around for 83 years. It could just be the pictures, but it looks to be lacking luster; a possible sign of being cleaned.
not sand paper - more like cleaned with a scotch brite. theres hairlines all over the obverse and reverse. as long as its not altered its still a key date. somewhere around the 200 range id think?
I think you are correct. This would probably sell for $200-$250. Here is an EF-cleaned that sold for $217. http://cgi.ebay.com/1928-Peace-Doll...66?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item45f9d3ea3a
Really? a 1928 Peace dollar key date is worth melt? In G4, a non cleaned one is worth $276 Let me know how many you want to sell me for melt....
I'll buy those all day long for melt, even with the problems, even at today's melt. A key date is still a key date.
I agree that this coin has been harshly cleaned but it certainly isn't worth melt. The 1928 is the key coin of the Peace Dollar series and even in this condition caries a substantial premium. The problem with coins like this is...they are hard to price. A lot of people simply don't want damaged coins in their collection. I personally wouldn't buy it. Damaged coins are hard to move. That said, I do agree with earlier postings that this coin could fetch $200-$250.
Go price "harshly cleaned" 1928-P's and get back to us. Heck, I'll give you double melt for coins like the OP's. (And flip them quickly for a 100%+ profit, as I'm trying not to accumulate problem coins.)
