I'm considering cashing out some of my silver hoard for key date coins. Was looking for a nice coin that will retain value well, and be fairly liquid. Ideally somewhere in the $2k-$3k range. I'd prefer some higher-end specimens... any suggestions?

seems like a reasonable thing to do, I am considering doing the same thing for myself.I would suggest going for this austrian gold coin. Its the same one I plan to by. http://www.coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins?main_coin=6929&main_ct_id=21
Unless of course you collect U.S coins then I recommend a semi key ms 64 gaudens gold piece. But thats just my thoughts

US is what I'm going for... I'm trying to pick up a coin with numismatic value, not metal value, gold would be defeating the purpose of selling my silver, which is to get out of what I feel is a bit of a bubble.

I considered an '09-S VDB, but I think I'd be lucky to pick up a nice coin for $2500 or so. I'd definitely be looking for a RB or RD coin instead of a BN.

I converted 2 Maple Leafs into 4 Morgans at the Whitman Show.

I was thinking of doing the same. I was thinking a nice 1928 peace dollar, but im trying to put a nice set together of peace dollars so i might be a little bias.

I did that excat thing about a month ago. I sold all of my remaining junk silver and converted the money into rare, slabbed Mercury dimes.

Looks like 64RB's are right around $2500 for 09-S VDB's...

I would probably go for AU-58 keys.

Why? You think Everyman collections will grow in popularity or?

I don't know what an "Everyman collection" is.

Heres a few options: 1809 capped bust dime
    1840 liberty seated dime(draped)
    1815 capped bust quarter
    1847 O liberty seated quarter
    1896/1901 O barber half

not like there's any magic coin to buy, but if it were me I'd look at a 1901-S Barber Quarter

I have been selling a little silver at a time and buying the keys and semi keys I need to complete some circulated sets. I feel that complete sets may bring a nice return down the road. But in any case, I don't think you can go wrong with either Mercury dimes or Morgan Dollars. Both seem to have a high demand.

I would be looking to upgrade some coins in my set.
For example, Coin World Trends (now called "Coin Values") show a lot of older coins like Washington quarters, Walking Liberty halves, Franklin halves, Mercury dimes, etc., where the prices are the same for G, VG, F, sometimes even VF and EF. And I was very surprised to find that low-end uncirculated 1955 silver coins, which were much touted when I was just getting started in collecting, are basically reduced to scrap prices. And the Unc 1958-P quarter, which was a hot item back in the '60s, is also now just a "junk silver" coin, even in MS-60!

Non-MS sets. Full of AU58's for the most part.
#1; MS examples are going for north of $10k... Doesn't look like there's many AU's out there.
#2; Great suggestion, seems like MS64 or thereabouts is right in my price range.
#3; AU and better is out of my price range...
#4; Only original MS-level specimen I could find was sold on HA for like $17k in MS63. AU's are too affordable, then the price just spikes.
#5; Ms-level specimens are just out of my reach. Great, great suggestion, though. Maybe if I hold a little longer and sell at $60 an ounce...
Buying a higher-end one of those is nothing but a pipe dream for me.
I do love Mercs, a high quality '21 would be something to consider... 63-64 FB seem to fall into the higher end of that price spectrum. As far as Morgans, I'm kind of tired of looking at them right now, haha.

Like I said, I want high-level coins, not AG's and whatnot... that's just never been my collecting style.

All that said, I think I'm leaning towards either a '21 or '21-D Merc dime, or a 1909-S VDB. The SVDB is intriguing as it's a traditional key date coin and I'm sure there will always be demand for it.

I would buy something from this list (I have a 1905 double eagle, it's been going up every year quite a lot)
    1905 Double Eagle
    1908-D or 1909 Double Eagle
    1806 Quarter dollar
    1909-S VDB cent
    1793 large cent
I realize not all of these can be bought in MS-60 or better within your price range but the double eagles and SVDB cent can.

well, being a merc guy, what about a nice high-end 21 or 21-D or even a nice 42/41 or 42/41-D?

1955 DDO Lincoln cent has been a mover price wise historically. I think common date 67 Morgans are a good buy right now with some better dates available in the price range you stated.
