Not only do I think shipwreck pedigrees count, but there are also buried hoards. Here are three from hoards found on land. Roman empire: silver siliqua of Julian II, ca. 360-363 AD; found in 1887 in the East Harptree Hoard England: silver penny of King John, ca. 1213-1215, from the Gisors hoard found in Normandy England: silver groat of Henry VI, ca. 1422-1461, from the Reigate Hoard found in Surrey
It should..... I have this from "Luz" shipwreck.... Chile/ Spanish Kings AV 8 Escudos 1751-So Santiago Mint Fernando VI I remember this coin well/ I had finished a 14 hr day of cutting grass in 36 cel. heat. When I got home a registered letter had arrived from Stack's with that coin inside. I bought it from their pricelist for $1800US in Ch-BU.
True/ even more amazing is how coins that were struck almost 2000 years ago/ survived to this day in FDC condition. Like this one from Triton V/ ex: Enrico Caruso Coll. This is one of few coins that CNG graded "FDC" AV Aureus ND struck 286AD Cyzicus Mint Diocletianus
One has to jump through hoops and provide documentation. And PCGS declined to put the Reigate Hoard pedigree on my Henry VI groat on the label, as you can see. The only documentation I had on that one was the old handwritten dealer flip insert. The other two were bought from CNG auctions and thus had more trackable documentation that was more acceptable to the TPGs.
George Cook assembled possibly the most complete collection of Canadian coins ever, including all the big rarities (1911 dollar for example). The provenance is both a blessing and a curse, as he cleaned and ruined a lot of coins (he apparently liked them shiny). I suspect some "Cook bias" got into the grading room though, and I don't think this one was actually cleaned. It's currently getting a second opinion at another service.
Here is one from Kùnker Auction, "the Salzburg Coll. of Friedrich Popken" Salzburg/ Erzbistum AV 2 Dukaten 1582 Prince Archbishop Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi under HRE Rudolf II
AV 4 Dukaten 1848-A Wien Mint Austro-Hungarian Empire Ferdinand V 1835-48 ex: Karolus Collection/ Spink/ one of my favorite coins from my modest coll.
Well....modest compared to the famous collections/ collectors that these coins were acquired from. Example Popken's collection made up 5 Kùnker auction catalogues. That awesome "Tyrant Coll." worth gazillions. John
