Came into 20 Obama halves that have been run thru a bank counting machine. They appear to be gold-plated, with the painted side showing many chips and much peeling. Do these have any value beyond 50 cents, on account of their gold content? Many thanks, Curious1
To answer your question... no... gold plating something may add a cent or 2 worth of gold to a half dollar but it's more expensive to recover it then you are ever going to get back.
Well, they have several obama half dollars. Is the date 2008 or 2009 or no date? Not that it matters because one in great shape is only worth about $3. In the condition that you're mentioning, they are probably worth a buck tops.
Thanks to all for the responses. Enjoyed the political humor, as well. I didn't think they had much extra value, but I would have been happy to exchange 20 of those Obama halves for a shiny (or completely tarnished) US silver eagle. Oh well.
Actually, I saw an ad in one of the coin mags for these useless scraps of trash being sold for one silver dime. They may have changed that as the mag is a little over a month old. A silve rdime is worth too much now.
Unfortunately, this is numismatic junk. Gold plated, with maybe around $1.40 of gold, and a colored sticker of POTUS lplaced on the obverse. You have $.50 with of half dollar.
edited Doug, I'm not surprised you edited this but I could make the case that it's pertinent to this thread because it serves as evidence of the justification of our current president being on US coinage.
I can't believe how many people buy those painted and plated coins. Or colorized currency. It is just terrible.
i saw painted morgans and peace dollars for 40$ a piece and a belt buckle made out 4 morgans welded together
