That is a pretty nice Stone MT. I've been looking around for one of those. I was bidding on one at Heritage last night but I kept getting outbid.
Your question is good. It just looks that way in the photo. Toning isn't flaking off. The area that looks untoned is really a silvery lilac-gray with a smooth surface transition. Proofs often exhibit toning a little differently from business strike coins. Lance.
Thanks; I don't know Trade Dollars well and would've guessed a grade higher, if put to it. It's an attractive coin, particularly the obv.!
Here's another newp from the Santa Clara show. It's an 1847/47. The overdate on the 7 is very subtle on this variety and can be seen just at the very top of numeral. Lance.
Toning absolutely CAN flake off. That's not what happened on this coin, I'll wager. What I thinh happened to that '95 quarter is the coin was cleaned at one time (you can see the hairlines) and the coin has retoned as you see -- that also explains the 61 grade.
Picked up another 1 ounce round, nice sailboat on the obverse and constitution verse on the reverse. I have been looking for this one for a month now.
I love your images for the "look" the coins have. Question: pardon my noobness with this series. I guess I could look it up. The fields of this coin are polished correct? What are you doing to get the colors of a mirrored field to show like this. A lot of proofs I see the fields are black.. ignore me if the fields are matte Also - I know other will scream - but I want to see higher resolution. Is photobucket squashing them? what are your typical pixel dimensions of a coin image? questions questions questions.. sowwy
Hi. Yes, it's a proof with mirrored fields. But the toning keeps light from being fully reflected, as on a highly polished untoned coin. I usually size images at 600x600. Bigger can annoy, yes. And it's really overkill. The smallest flaws seem enormous and troubling. But okay...you asked for it. Also, I'd be happy to PM images. Lance.
I picked up this 62-63 on Wednesday for $36.50. Melt is $35.64 today. Numismedia says $68. I think it's either the doubled tiara or the rusted reverse. If doubled tiara, its over $100
hey lead and lance ... thanks for all the info about "flaked off" toning ... it's interesting i have to admit i LOVE that barber
Just Received Today Not the most valuable or rare Buffalo I've ever owned, but it has the best "look" than any I've ever had. Courtesy of Numismatic Americana. 1929 PCGS MS-66. The luster is simply unbelievable.
A neat little pick up for this morning. Not in amazing condition, I know, but getting it for under melt value makes up for the condition. Sorry for the picture quality, they are from my iphone.
Under melt sounds great! WTG! I'm always suspicious of raw gold. So much counterfeit out there. Make sure you weigh it and test it with a magnet. Should be 4.18g. What are those dark spots, BTW? Sure, the gold is alloyed with 10% copper and sometimes it can develop orange-like spots. I haven't seen ones quite like that. Lance.
I am convinced that we are ahead of the times with coins and imaging. As others learn about how a coin reacts under lighting and hi res, they will also learn how to interpret those images/distractions/flaws for what they are. As time goes on, I think/believe that dealers will also learn, that while hi res images can make the coin look worse than it is, there is nothing better than a pleased customer and comments of wow! this coin looks so much better in hand..... the tics and dings in your photos are hardly even noticible! rather than the converse.. 1000x1000 is ok but bigger is better! This is a fun coin to look at close up. IMO of course. NGC 64RB or BN can't remember, too lazy too look.. from a CT member here. Oh! nother thing about this coin. The scratch under Abes chin sure looks like the DD0 Type 2 marker to me! edit: it is slightly off in position compared to others.
It weighs in at 4.16g. The dark spots look like dirt or some sort of "gunk", they are not part of the coin, merely something on top of it. Anyone care to guess a grade and value for it? I have no plans on selling it because I love the style, but I'm always curious.
