S-VDB Planchet Flaw - PCGS Code 93

I don't error collect. I often see a lot of threads related to delams and the such. I thought it was interesting to come across this coin this morning.

I don't think the flaw is that distracting at all. The spots are, I guess. Regardless a nice candidate for cracking out for inclusion to an MS-AU Cent collection?

Interesting. I don't understand how a planchet flaw would be PMD though. They gave it a Genuine label for something that couldn't be controlled outside of the mint? :scratch:

The best I can say is "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I like the coin all things considered, but to give you a little perspective, I paid $200 less for mine and it got graded(62 BN). That will give you a comparator. FWIW, I would rate the 2 coins very similar.

BTW, Brian, what makes you say a planchet flaw is PMD. PCGS grading it as genuine does not mean PMD, only that there is a problem

 

I don't think Brian said it's PMD. What he was saying is that since PCGS didn't grade it cleanly they must have felt it was PMD because Mint problems are normally excused.

In truth, not all Mint mistakes are cleanly graded, as evidenced by this rather unhappy S-VDB. PCGS market-grades coins and felt in this case the Mint damage was not market acceptable. I agree.

Planchet flaws are pre mint damage. They are still considered problem coins by all grading companies. In my opinion it is not at error, just damage. If you buy a coin pre or post mint with a big gash in it the coin still looks just as bad. If you like it then by it. Just don't pay a premium for the "error"

I should have bought it. He raised the price $500 since I placed my offer. It was 1200 this morning. I wondered why he didn't decline or counter.


Oh well... that best offer thingy stung me again. Then again, maybe he made a typo and would have backed out anyway.

$1200 seemed like a steal since - it is a mint error/flaw and had MS details

 

Here is another. Looks like the spots were worked on. Anyone want to give me their educated opinion on what they think this coin will look like in a year?

EEW, I hope you are not considering that one. It's a train wreck. Buy a problem-free key date, if at all possible.

BTW, how do you accidentally sell an XF S-VDB?

I listed it at as an attention getter to other coins at PCGS price guide and it sold! I bought it a few months earlier at almost half what it sold for. I should be happy, I guess. I would like an AU MS coin worthy of cracking out to complete my raw set. I am ok with problem coins for that set.
