As I am new to coin collecting I'm far from being an expert so this question may be a little stupid. I read somewhere that there are 1973 Philadelphia pennies with no vdb but that the ones from Denver and San Francisco do have the vdb? I am looking at a 1973 D penny and see no vdb. Where is it located if it is supposed to be there?
Look on the truncation of Lincoln's bust. (That is where VDB has appeared on all Lincoln Cents since 1917.)
Victor David Brenner's (V.D.B.) initials should be directly located under the Lincoln bust on the obverse of the Lincoln Memorial Cent (For a short period of time in the year 1909 the designer's initials were located on the bottom-reverse side of the Lincoln Wheat Cent). The only reason I could think that they wouldn't be there is from a grease-filled die. -Brian
Is it tiny? Because I am not seeing it. I'm at work and do not have a magnifier with me but from what I can tell it isn't there.
Never mind sorry I found it. I found it on another penny so I knew exactly where to look. It is there but it's so faint it looks like a slight scratch.
Oh, 1917? Really? I thought that the year was 1909...? You may be correct. I don't inspect Wheat Cents that often. -Brian
Yes, it's very subtle. If it were to large and bold it would take away from the overall eye appeal of the coin in my opinion. -Brian
I was off by one year. When the Lincoln Cent was introduced in 1909 Victor D Brenner (the designer) placed his initials on the reverse. After public disapproval of the designer's initials on the coin they (the initials) were removed entirely. The designer's initials returned to the Lincoln Cent in 1918 at their current location on the truncatio of Lincoln's bust.
