For me personally, when I start a new phase of collecting I tend to buy quanity. After I am into a new set, then I go for quality.
http://dougsmith.ancients.info/acmshow.html I've been working on a sequel to my coin show article (above) where I compared three collectors' views on what was worth collecting. Then, even junk collectors usually avoided defective and ugly coins unless they were special in some other way. In the decade since that time I have, it seems, gone from what was then considered a junk collector to, relatively speaking, a condition snob. I do have a couple broken coins and a hand full of holed ones but try to stick with better looking when possible. Remember in ancients that are coins where the best known is not even a good Fine so your choice might be own it or not.
