I have some Israel mint sets – they are great to collect because they are mostly cheap in price. Also, the Israel Govt Coins and Medals organization makes some great bronze medals – I have a great one honoring “Operation Jonathan” on July 4, 1976, when the Israelis rescued hostages from Entebbe in Uganda. A quick question….where are Israeli coins made? I think I read that it is not in Israel. Anyone know where the coins are minted?
Ah...somebody that likes coins from Israel I just got some from a friend and realy liked them--I had an great-aunt that was a Missionary years ago and on the way to the place they were going she picked up many foreign coins that I got about 5 years ago..in there was coins from Israel and India, Great Brittan and other countries...I guess that was about the time I started collecting... Prutah Coin with & without Pearl I recently purchased some Israeli coins and one of them was a 10 prutah coin with pearls. What is the difference between one with pearls and without.
Mainly in price, due to slightly different mintage amounts. With pearl UNC is around $20 USD catalog value (in reality the price is lower), without pearl is $3 in UNC. There are quite a few Israeli coins collectors here, Pilot: ברוכים הבאים
I guess only the old Irish Republic coins can compete with isreal for the most gastly looking coinage. Except for the 1971 10 Lirot with the stylized bomber and missle on it, every other coin is UGLY !!! IMHO
Don't particularly like coin with military themes, but many other coins from Israel are beautiful. Sure, as in many countries the circulation pieces are somewhat less attractive than the pieces made for collectors ... Hi Pilot. Finally - a couple of people into this. My Set is Here - http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=1511 Very challenging to build a 1948-1957 era mint state set - especially getting the 1948 25 Mils or 1949 Open Link piece. Country was established right after WW II and coinage took a backseat to establishing the state and survival. If anyone wants additional info, feel free to PM me.
Utrecht Die Variety Now if you really want to get into it, this one is a toughie - especially in high grades - The utrecht variety is one of the most famous rarities in the Israel trade coin series. The smaller wreath (farther from rim) variety, below right as compared with the Berne die, was struck using in the Royal Dutch Mint at Utrecht. Sylvia Haffner writes: "The 1954 reduced size 100 Prutah was withdrawn from circulation shortly after issue when it was discovered that the similarity in size to the 50 Prutah led to confusion between the two. The number of coins destroyed is not available. The difference between the Berne and utrecht dies was not discovered until 1960, three years after the coins were released in 1957. Only about 1,000 of the utrecht die variety are presently believed to exist. Most I have seen are in VF-XF condition.
