Germany-Democratic Republic was proclaimed at 7th October 1949. It was the German's socialist state. GDR had an area 108333 sq.km. and a population about 16770000. GDR was an ally of USSR until 3th October 1990 when GDR was annuled. A coins of GDR are very interesting for me and I have a big stuff of it. I hope that you'll enjoy it too.
1 pfennig 1949, aluminium. Minted in Berlin. Coins of this type minted in 1948-1950. So, this is a coin that was minted during the Russian occupation of Eastern Germany; but in 1949-1950 that coins minted in GDR too.
10 pfennig 1952, aluminium. Minted in Muldenhutten. Coins of that type minted in 1952 & 1953. Rather expensive coin (about 45$ value).
Yes, I have quite a few of those too. What I have always found interesting is that, while the coins from the Federal Republic of Germany had that country name right away, the coins from the German Democratic Republic (East G.) simply used "Deutschland" until 1956. Also, the design with the gear and the wheat (?) ear - that you show in your post #2 and #5 - has an interesting history. The Berlin mint made that design - in 1943. For Nazi Germany's "Reichskommissariat Ukraine". Ultimately those Ukraine coins were not minted, except for a few "50 Kopeken" test pieces ... Christian

20 pfennig 1969, brass. Minted in Berlin. It's the first coinage of a coins of that type. I got this coin when I was a little boy.
50 pfennig 1950, aluminium-bronze. Minted in Berlin. Coins of that type minted in 1949 (several pcs only) and in 1950 (67703000 pcs).
Good idea for a thread Eugene. Here is a DDR coin that I like very much. Also a interesting commemorative from the Marshall Islands (Once a German Colony,Then Japanese, then American, now independant). And my favorite post war West German image. I really love the symbolism of this coin (Rebirth) I have a 1949 image but I just can not find it at this time.
