Here is an ancient coin from China my father purchased seevral years back. I am going to list it for him to sell but do not know much about it. Any help would be graetly appreciated. It is apx 4 & 1/2 inches long and weighs apx 371 grams. Thanks
It is a silver Sycee, though I am doubtful it is real. These are forged in great numbers, have been for 100 years, and real ones are very valuable. I don't like the look of the shape or markings. How did your father come across it? What kind of shop and how much did he pay? I have seen these things sold in SE Asia and China for a couple decades at least, and they are even sold in Asian markets here. Edit: Its big enough, have you tried to do a specific gravity test on it to see if its silver? Most of these are made of a heavish metal, but not perfectly aligned with silver weight.
It depends. Some people use sycee to cover more broad a group than the upright issues, but point taken Ripley.
He bought these from a man with several other world coins and paper money. I have sold most of them for him and all the buyers were happy witht he coins they bought. Many of the notes were unc and sequential. I have not tested it. Didnt the weight of these vary? Thanks for the info
Yes the boats come in many different sizes. j I believe yours to be a 1/2 Tael, and should weigh around... say...18 grams. Be easier for me to read if you held it upright instead of sideways. at 371g it should read 10 Tael.
It's from Vietnam, the inscription is "Made in Tự Ðứ" and "Fine silver ten taels". Tự Ðức is the reign-mark of Emperor Dực Tông (1847-1883). But please be aware of the forgeries.
If authentic what would the value be? Just wondering if it would be worth having certified or just checked to see if it is silver. Thanks again.
