1940 P Nickel Roll - Uncirculated

Is a roll of uncirculated 1940 "P" nickels worth $10.00? Or is it worth spending any money on at all?

I collect many unc nickel rolls. I will say a roll of 1940 p uncirculated is most definitely worth $10.

Thanks. I have been buying silver as a method of saving but I am thinking that until things calm down with silver I will start saving more with unc nickel rolls.

Do you think that when they change to composition of the nickel (which I believe has to take place within the next couple of years) it will then drive the value of unc rolls and other nickels way up?

Well I guess that depends on your definition of 'way up"

My opinion is yes, the values will go up. However, I am not so sure the value of old uncirculated nickels will really be based on metal composition values. I personally beleive the value will be the collectible value. It will only help if nickels start disappearing from circulation though.

I assuming he meant unc not OBW. But $10 is still a good price for unc. IMHO.

 

Probably cherrypicked already, so I'd say don't expect to find any full steps or anything.

Yes OBW would be worth more. That would give you the chance of finding some real gems in there, or ones with full steps.

 

How does one identify an OBW from any other 'roll'?
And the prices listed in reference materials like red book or magazines for rolls, are those OBW prices or just 'roll' prices?

 

I beleive the prices on the greysheets and such are for regular rolls of uncirculated nickels. It is pretty hard to identify an actual OBW roll. They would still be wrapped in the original wrapper, and never opened. I have been lucky in finding these OBW rolls, but don't get me wrong, some people are skilled at getting the coins out, picking them, and putting them back in the roll without noticing they have been opened.

 

I love nickels but I don't know much. Can you explain what a "full step" is? I assume it has to do with the steps on the building on the back of the coin.

Also, I never can find new rolls, how do these guys that sell news rolls get them? Can an ordinary guy, who doesn't own a coin business get new rolls from the bank or any institution? Every time I ask a teller for new coins their eyes glaze over or sometimes I even get a dirty look! Even if I just ask for coins in general the response is usually (but no always) "do you have an account here?"
