I respectfully disagree. I have literally seen hundreds of coins from this date with heavy die polish.
The lines dont seem to carry through the wings, arrows or wreath so to me that is more die polish. I would be curious to see the cheek at that angle.
Fair enough, I've seen more than a few myself. Well that's the thing with coins that have the mirrored fields like a Proof coin does. Take a cloth sometime and wipe it across a Proof. You'll see the hairlines in the fields plain as day, but not a mark on the devices. Now I will grant you, die polish lines can usually be easily distinguished with a coin in hand. But when dealing with pictures, harsh cleaning marks look a whole lot like die polish lines. And yes, the that includes the lines being raised. Light scratches and heavy hairlines can produce raised lines. How ? Because the displaced metal has to go someplace - that place is right beside the incuse line. This is something that a lot of folks fail to realize. Die polish lines will all be raised. Harsh cleaning lines are both, raised and incuse. Not just incuse ! And that is what the marks on that coin look like to me - raised and incuse. edit - Now could I be wrong ? You bet. But by the same token I could be right. All any of us have to go by are some not very good pictures.
Thanks for the explanation, I was just curious to hear what you were seeing. I do agree that those images will not allow any for any definitive answer.
I wouldn't crack that coin out... it looks like there's a thumbprint on Q4 (lower-right corner) of the obverse.
I cant imagine anyone cracking out a 65DMPL in this environment. Yes there is s thumbprint but the coin is great and among my favorites of the 100+ PL/DMPL PCGS coins I have.
I knew you were cornering the market. Nice investment though, those DMPL and PL Morgans are starting to move up... just as I get into 'em, too, ugh.
I bet money those marks WOULD be noticed. Before that pic I was going 64, but now, 61 DMPL. Just noticed the lines in that pic. I fall on the die polish side, but it IS hard to say for sure from that pic. And I certainly wear gloves when handling UNCs and Proofs. I havent seen a dealer handling such coins at shows though. All that I have dealt with were slabbed or 2x2d or rolls or the like so there was no need.
The fields are very mirror like and they reflect highly so I wouldn't be surprised if a TPG would give it at least a proof like designation if not a deep mirror proof like one. As far as the grade it should be at least a MS63. I don't think your coin has bag marks but just luster grazes. As you said that the coin in hand doesn't reveal all of the marks that it does when photographed. Nice coin. I would definitely consider it for my Morgan collection if given the opportunity.
Amen to that ... it actually makes me a little bit sick to my stomach to see it ... over and over and over. Why are so many people clueless about oils and fingerprints???
