Picked this up today (old habits... ). Kinda hard to get a nice shot of it though. I believe its: Antoninus Pius AR Denarius. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P IMP II, laureate head right / TR POT XIX COS IIII, Annona standing left with corn ears & modius set on prow. RSC 983 RIC 249 Does the prow correlate with anything specifically? I saw somewhere else that it reffered to grain from provinces (particularly africa) but is there more meaning to it than that?
Randy I think it is supposed to convey this thought. The hand on the rudder = Hand on the "Ship of State;"
I read it as: "Annona and the emperor have joined together to bring in all these ships of imported grain so you won't need to worry about food." Growing grain does no good if you don't have transportation to move if from fields to tables.
