The picture above is a 1881-S in mintstate condition. I was woundering what you would grade this coin and if it is PL or DMPL or better. Above is the coin reflecting objects from 2-4 inches away. Above is the coin reflecting objects from 2 feet away. --Can you help me grade my coin?? THANK YOU!!
There's no way it even touches those grades. The pics need a lot of work, but I can see considerable bag marks on it that would probably put in the realm of a 62-63.
The photos aren't good enough for me to determine either the grade or a PL/DMPL designation. The best way to determine the PL/DMPL designation is to place the coin at the end of a ruler and see how many inches you can read in the reflection. If you can read 6"-8", it would be DMPL. Chris
Hope that these pictures might help a little more. Thanks if you can give a grade & if it is PL or DMPL or better.
Tis pic. shows the bag marks, and only bag marks. There is no wear on the hair of the eagles belly. It also shows the DMPL or CAMEO look to the coin. PLEASE SPARE A GRADE FOR ME.
magnified the coin more. The bag marks might take off some of the grade. But there is no wear on the coin. I think it is a Ms-64 or 65 give or take the bag marks.
That pic is by far the best. The coin has a lot of bagmarks, I'd say MS61. It's always hard to judge PL or DMPL from pics, but those fields look deep enough for DMPL.
IN person the bag marks are unnoticed, but magnified and put under special LED lights with a special lens the bag marks are ditected, if i were to send this to a grading service they would go unnoticed and the coin would grade MS-64 or better. --K2Coins
Ms61 DMPL would be my guess. Only handle it by the sides, dude, if it gets any fingerprints, you'll just tank any value it has.
OK. We have the grade narrowed down to MS-61 to MS-67. PL to DMPL. That doesn't bode well for the previously-proposed 'Coin Talk Coin Grading Service'.
