Looking at this underweight coin with only one C and I am curios, experts what do you think happened to this coin?

No expert, but surfaces look pretty grainy.
And the AI are joined at the bottom in GRAINS.

I vote fake.

Looks like somebody scrawled an H where the C was.

 

That was supposed to be my line!!!.

 

C=China or Copy or Corgi

 

But they got bored before they finished the I-N-A.

 

Glued on mint mark, one fell off.

 

I vote fake also, for several reasons.

 

I agree looks like an H where the C should be. Someone new it was altered and pryed it off.
I have a 16D Merc that lost a glued-on MM.
We tried to find it. But it has been lost to the carpet for ever.

 

I sent the seller a message yesterday. His reply:

 

That coin is one I wouldn’t touch if the price was only a dollar.

 

Maybe ask him if he can drill it, too. You know, just to be really sure.

 

He does state "Looks like the second c was removed"...

Been a while since I have seen a body bag photo'd. It would be nice if PCGS gave a bit more info to the reason.
I wonder if the second C was still attached when he sent it?

 

The mint mark isn't the only reason why that's a fake.

 

Looks like they previously sold a fake gold bar.

 

Over the course of collecting, I've learn one hard fast rule: never buy a Trade Dollar that hasn't been authenticated by a reputable company. Unless you are an expert in Trade Dollars, there are just too many (good) fakes out there.
