I am in the process of trying to locate a 1932-D Washington Quarter for a fair price and certified and slabbed by a trusted grading company, such as PCGS and NGC (I am trying to stay away from ANACS[new] and ICG). I stumbled across this coin (link below) and was wondering if I should consider bidding on this coin. I wanted some CoinTalker opinions on the grading company, SEGS, and if their grading was accurate and close to the grading standards of PCGS or NGC.

    Thank You CoinTalkers,
    Brian

SEGS is probably one of the worst TPG's around.

SEGS and SGS are two completely different outfits and should NOT be confused.

But (as we saw above) they are confused every day. If SEGS has selected a different acronym (or if SGS had used a different acronym) they (SEGS) may be one of the top-tier TPGs today.

SEGS (Sovereign Entities Grading Service) will never be one of the top tier companies, but that doesn't mean you can't find some nice coins in their slabs. I wouldn't buy any of their slabs unless I could see it in hand, first.........buy the coin, not the slab!

This is my favorite SEGS purchase which I got at the FUN Show about 6 years ago.

One thing for sure, irregardless of the assigned grade, the coin will be certified 99.9% "Genuine" buying a raw 32-D off the net would be risky business, at least this ones in some somewhat creditable plastic.

SEGS and PCI are okay if you take a close look.
I would buy from them if I liked the coin, but I'd do a crossover to NGC.

SEGs I do not have a problem with - but I would skip that auction solely because the pictures are not clear enough for me. The two morgans my father had crossed over to with a 1 point lower grade as mentioned - and I can't remember if it was pcgs or ngc he did the crossover with.

SEGS is not a bad grading service but they are not top tier. I bought my 1931-S Lincoln cent in a SEGS holder and it's nice. SGS (Star Grading Service) tends to overgrade their coins like crazy, just about every coin I see that they have graded is assigned with a crazy high grade. Lincoln cents from 2009, 2010 and on graded SGS MS-70 are more common than PCGS MS-67 Lincoln cents by the same year.

I also have to ask, why steer away from ANACS and ICG? I have no problems with their grades at all. Hell, I have 4 Morgans coming back to me from ICG in a week or so.

And I wouldnt bid too hard on that simply because those pics suck and I cant see it clearly enough to warrant bidding high or hard.

Yep ya got that right. Personally I wouldn't buy a 1932-D or S off of ebay just like I wouldn't buy a 1916-D dime off of ebay. Those coins are the most faked coins in the world and I would want to see them in hand before I buy one. just my 2 cnts

I couldn't agree with you more, Fredboard. I love when I see other members like us two that wouldn't risk it and buy key dates like those on e bay.

Like I said in other threads, you have no idea what your getting until you receive it, if you receive it at all.

Not about not buying a key date. I am looking at one right now from a top rated seller that if I had the extra 125 Id grab it this instant. PCGS graded, top seller, good pics. Little risk at all.

Coin, you are getting really annoying with this paranoia of yours.

PCGS, NGC or ANACS. I stay away from other TPGs.
