Dropped off my dry cleaning on the way home just now. One of my ex-students works there and knows I collect coins. He saved 2 halves for me. One was a 1968 and the other was a 1995S which I needed for my circulated set of "proofs". That completes my set except for 2010S and 2011S.

    hip hip hooray!

Stopped at a branch of my bank in a small town in MI. Picked up $26 in CWR (old faded wrappers....good sign) and asked if they had anything weird. One lady piped up that she had a "roll of big dollars". I bought them. 17 were circulated Ikes. 3 were holed 1922 Peace Dollars. Made my day. My daughter is wearing one around her neck right now. My little Lady Liberty.

my bags I've done a little better than 4 since I was less than 1 per on the boxes. Here is my breakout of the 8 bags I've done:
    8, 4, 1, 8, 5, 5, 4, 4

For cents, nickels and halves, I look at every coin. For dimes, especially 10,000 dimes that are in a bag, I only look at the edges and pull silver and bright edge coins looking for 2009. So, it doesn't take that long.

Erin: Congrats. I still need the 1995 S, plus the 2010 and 2011 S like you. If you find an extra 1995 S......let me know

Does it take you about an hour to do a bag of dimes?

I know this is a stupid question, but besides halfs that were made from 1970 and before, how do you know if they are silver? Also, where do you get bags and boxes of coins?

    Latest finds:

    2 boxes half dollars:

    1 1979 S Proof Type 2
    2 40% Kennedys
    4 NIFC (including a high AU 1987D)
    2 Conditional Keepers (high grade)

The Type 2 Proof was pretty cool...and always rewarding to find a couple silvers. At least I didn't get any skunk boxes!

I don't know...I've never timed it. I usually don't do it in one sitting. 10,000 coins is a lot, but it doesn't take as long as it seems it would.

you can order boxes of coins from the bank. I just got $500 worth of half dollars to go through. No silver... I think they must weigh them before placing them in the box? all i got good was a 1981S the rest junk. whats so special abot 1987? i did not get one... I got all the rest from 1971 through 2001 D & S - the rest are goign back to the bank

awwatchdog1 - half dollars weren't released for circulation in 1987. Mintages (as an example):

    1986P - 13.1 million
    1986D - 15.3 million
    1987P - 2.9 million
    1987D - 2.9 million
    1988P - 13.6 million
    1988D - 12 million

Did 2 boxes of halfs and only got 1 90%er
    Also did 2 boxes of nickels got a 43' S and 47 pre1960 coins
Lastly a box of cents only yielded 3 wheats 1 Canadian and about 18% copper

I just hope I still have enough cash in the bank to search some boxes back home...boxes here in Salt Lake City have been pretty barren...nothing like Champaign-Urbana, Illinois...had boxes with around 125 silver halves in them, including Barbers, Walkers, Franklins, Proofs...the good old days...that box would be worth close to $1500 today...

    Starfish cent

Didn't get any halves yesterday, so I went through some cents. Had about 19% copper, no wheats in 7 rolls. But, I found my first Starfish Cent. It is really a great looking coin, IMHO. It is from the Bahamas. My year is 2004 and it is in AU red condition.

I didn't get a picture of it, but if you've never seen this coin (I hadn't until I found it), here is a link to it. Mine is in much better condition than the one pictured.

No, it isn't worth much, but I loved finding it and that is one of the reasons this hobby is so fun.

I've been finding those a bit more frequently lately, Bob... maybe a sign that the economy is getting better?

I'm going through a nice bag of cents right now, I'll post up about it once I'm done... probably around $15-$20 left.

    Alright, bag of cents #2.

Let's start off with the goodies...

    1907 IHC :D IHC #3 for me. :)
RD '56 Wheat. 4th RD wheat I've found in about $2kish searched... so keeping my rate of one every $500 or so.
My first proof, a heavily impaired '80-S... has target rainbow toning, which is the first thing that caught my eye... because the coin is so damaged it no longer has mirrored surfaces.
A 2006 with a strike-through over and around the date.
    A 1998 WAM.
Another Kennedy counterstruck... Funny thing, I had searched over $1k in cents without finding any counterstrikes, and in my past $250 or so, I've found several.
    17 dimes.

1 2006 BU Bahamas, 1 King George Canadian cent ('42), and 4 other Canadians.
