What condition were the notes in? You get them for face I assume? Very nice.

The notes were pretty beat up, most torn and stained. I took them to dealers I do business with and they said they were not worth more than face. I actually used 20 of them to buy a lot of silver halves today for face at a bank. So technically, I redeemed them for silver coins.

Any old stars are pretty cool finds, especially $1 from the 1970's! Is it in decent condition?

A teller at one of the banks I visit saved a Series 1934 $5 FRN, and it's a mule note. There's a tear in the top and it's quite beat up, but it's the oldest bill I've ever found in circulation, beating out a '34C $20 FRN I found less than a month ago.

Guys, I have a question. New to the game here. I want to go my bank and ask for a strap. I've never done it before. I'm going to have about $500 in cash in a couple of days thanks to my brother paying me back some money. What do you guys think I should do with it? I'm into stars, low SN's, older bills, $2 bills. I guess my questions are:

Do banks charge extra to exchange money? Like if I have a $20 and they have 10 $2 bills, can they charge a fee for swapping them?

Do you guys go to different branches of the same bank? Also do you have to have an account with the bank to go to a teller and ask them if they have any older bills?

Do I ask them if they have any brand new bills?

    Here are my thoughts:

    1. No a Bank should not charge you extra for exchanging notes or coin.

    2. How to ask for a strap; (You to the teller)- Do you currentlly have a strap of $2 notes? If not, can I order 1 please?

    3. Yes by all means ask for new notes. The better place to get such notes is at a Federal Reserve Bank, there are 12 of them across the Country.

    4. $500 cash will not get you too far with older stars, low SNs or other older Gem notes. Be selective and know what you want to buy before you go into it blindly. Save some $$$ for the rainy day fund as well.
    Good luck.

I've got to agree with RickieB on this one. Banks will not charge to "exchange" money. I've gone into banks before I had my local teller and asked for new straps and never had any problem. If they ask you can always say they're to go in birthday cards, Chrismas cards, etc. Most people do that around the holidays anyway, so why not now?

Well, I went to a bank near me today to cash a check. I mentioned to the teller that I collect old money and asked her if she might have any older bills or $2 bills. She quickly told me no they don't. She didn't even look. Oh well.

I order $200 in $2 bills every other week or so from my bank. They don't circulate much so ordering them is the way to go.

I have found that some banks won't exchange coins\currency if you don't have an account. It can be frustrating.

Picked up $300 in singles on my way home. Found 3-4 common stars. Also found and kept a 1977A note and a Barr note.

We just went through 3 straps of 2s in the last couple days. got some runs and twins, but nothing else. I have grabbed 3 dollar stars, 20 dollar twins and 5 dollar twins so far this week at work.

Just keep trying with the tellers. I had that problem with 3 other banks until I found the right one. They would look at me strange when I went in looking for halves. Once you find someone willing to hold something like that for you, you know you can ask for anything.

Don't know where you guys bank, I do business with several - and there are mere few miscreants in the bunch - rather most tellers are right glad to see my visage in the lines. I buy up all the strange stuff they don't like to have to count, authenticate and buy old notes and AM NOT ABOVE the giving of little gift cards etc as rewards for their hard work and cooperation in building my hoards of numismatic treasure. I would amuse myself to think they think I am cute or something, but rather I believe it is the subtle little goodies I give out. My tellers all know about the whole branch going to lunch on me for $500 or $1000 bills that find my way. One teller that saves me stuff got a Peace Dollar, of course bank rules being what they are she had to give me a dollar for it.

A wee dram of sugar goes a long way in a bank.

Searched one strap of singles today, got one star. Also snagged six $2 bills, two of which are extra crispy.
