Great info, thanks for the posts. I did a quick search at Heritage for Seated dollars at their last auction for
what sold in the 250-500 dollar range. I also factored in the buyer's premium and shipping.

Looking at these coins there's nothing I'd want in my type set. Maybe 5 years ago you could have
bought this coin for $250, but I just don't see it now.

Here are links to 5, 1842 dollars, all problem coins and ranging from VF to AU that sold from between $230 and $322 in the last 6 months.

Yes there are a couple of others that sold for a bit more. But that is pretty much the going range. Anything outside that is an aberation.

I guess it's a matter of personal preference. You can get a problem Seated Dollar for $100 if you want. As for me
I hate the look of cleaned coins and dislike anything under XF, so, as for me, I don't think I could fill the slot with
something I liked for $300, but that's just me.

I realized the buyers premium is already included in the historical price so all my numbers above are inflated by 17%.

    Happy collecting!

My only point was that you bought a problem coin. No idea what you paid for it, but it should have been priced like those I linked to.

    I disagree.
Though this coin has some 'dings' on the rim, it has 1000x better eye appeal than any of those problem coins linked to.
I think the coin was worth it and will look much better in a type set than those harshly cleaned examples.

You're allowed, others may disagree also. But that is a chocolate and vanilla choice.

A coin can have severe rim rings, like this one. It can be scratched. It can have severe planchet flaws. It can be harshly cleaned. It can have a big gouge. It can have altered surfaces. It can be artificially toned. It can be corrorded. The list goes on. But in the end, a problem coin is a problem coin is a problem coin.

Take your pick - which do like better ? Chocolate ? Or vanilla ?
